Hey,
I read a blog on druids. It usually gives me little tips here and there about how to play a cat in raids.... little tidbits like using feral charge on dragons in melee range. Their hit box is so large, you're within the minimum range.
I ran by this:
http://wow.joystiq.com/2011/03/13/shift ... eral-drui/
Since Andy and I both cut the line on a bear/cat spec, I thought I'd post it here. The author's spec is slightly different, but mostly in utility.
The point of the article is one of utility. When reading through a lot of his raiding guides, he'll say things like "X ability hits really hard, be prepared to go bear and tank over in a pinch." It isn't as much of an issue in our raids because Dorian is usually there to be the back up tank, but I always have it in the back of my head.
In any case, to the numbers:
1) Bear gear is usually gemmed/reforged for dodge, so you lose 3-4% avoidance
2) Different Meta, so you're down armor
3) You have more crit, so you'll proc Savage Defense more often (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=62600)
Overall a hybrid bear in cat gear will take 5% more damage
Threat: You lose 10% damage to mangle (glyph) but you're in higher dps gear
He had some suggestions about hybrid glyphing... some ideas of bear glyphs. I personally have all cat glyphs. It makes tanking a bit more of a pain, but I can't sacrifice any dps for utility that our raid may only need on a blue moon.
I found it an interesting read.

Re: Hybrid ferals
By back up tank you mean me switching to blood presence, while in frost spec and gear, and praying?
Re: Hybrid ferals
The whole notion of someone not in tank gear, tank spec, "picking up and tanking" mid-fight, is wishful thinking.
If things have gotten to that point, it's a wipe, because it was done wrong.

Re: Hybrid ferals
I do agree that if this situation would come up we'd have screwed up majorly...
I see two situations this could come into play
1) MT/OT goes down and someone needs to stand in while a BR goes off. Short term situation.
2) MT/OT goes down shortly before the end of the fight. Someone steps in and we turn a assured wipe into a VERY sloppy kill
The thing I found interesting about the article is a hybrid in cat gear only takes 5% more damage. I'll believe this. If you recall, Andy and I are always rolling OS on the same gear to reforge/reenchant differently. 5% more damage for a short term situation could save a fight.
Now this is all theoretical. I'm like likely to DO anything with this information.
