I've been out of the game a bit, but wondering if there is anything I can be doing to prepare myself for raiding if I ever can do so.
Does it make sense to do the Firelands dailies? Run 5-mans for Valor points? Are there recipes for items or weps that I should be farming for?

There are some rewards that come from the Firelands dailies, and others from "Avengers of Hyjal", the rep from Firelands raid. It's possible to farm trash there with a pug (if you miss raid) and get up to honored. That would get you a cape and belt upgrade, the dailies get you a ring (Matoclaw's Band) after just 2~3 days, and from those of us who have done the dailies longer and unlocked some vendor patterns, we could even make you a gun upgrade.
There's also the quest chain involving Thrall (confusingly addressed as Go'el by his amateur psychoanalyst* lady-orc) which also gets you a cape upgrade, for Free**, but the Avengers rep cape at Friendly may soon replace it.
Oh, and the new Baradin Hold boss, Occuthar, could also drop new tier pieces as well. So there's plenty of low-hanging fruit.

I can make the new 365 gun and scope for you Kevin so that should help some.

Do the dailies, as you advance the chain and buy to unlock new areas there's some 365 ilvl upgrades that come from vendors there - in total for hunters it comes out to: boots, trinket and two rings. There's also an easy and fast 365 cloak from doing Thrall's quest chain (started by the shaman in SW on the portal island) and it's so quick to get. It gets replaced pretty quickly once you start getting rep with Avengers of Hyjal, but it's a really nice item for the amount of effort it takes to get it.
