It's probably the buff doing the trick. If you hit enough of the floaty balls, you get a buff that give you insane crit or something...

Yeah, as you absorb damage, you gain charges, and when you hit 100 you get 200% damage for a duration, then the count resets. So the achievement "Salt & Pepper" where you kill them in 3 minutes, really depends on enough people getting that early and unloading on the girls sooner.

As I was trying during the first fight, it's also possible to just click the other portal and change colors- your charge stack stays the same, but it affects what 200% damage buff you get- it too is polarized light/dark.
