We're pleased to announce a new feature being added to the Mobile Armory: Guild Chat!

Coming soon in an update to the Mobile Armory app available in the iTunes App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/M...321057000&mt=8 ) and Android Market, this new feature will allow all World of Warcraft Remote subscribers the ability to chat with their guildies right from their mobile device. Access to the guild chat feature is included for no extra charge in the $2.99 World of Warcraft Remote Auction House ( http://www.wowarmory.com/wow-remote.xml ) premium monthly subscription. In addition, soon after the launch of the mobile version we're planning on adding the ability for premium subscribers to use Guild Chat through any browser on the Armory website.

Guild Chat will allow you to chat with your guildmates via Guild Chat, Officer Chat, and Whispers. Now you can stay connected with your guild or update them from anywhere if you're going to be late to a raid! Stay tuned for additional information about this service and the upcoming Mobile Armory Guild Chat beta test.
So I can't say I didn't see this coming. When you started using your battle.net account to chat across servers, my first question was, "Why can't I whisper via www.battle.net?

Now I have to say for $3/mo, this will probably get me. The ability to chat while not online... especially via my phone is inviting. While I found the ability to check my mailbox and play with the AH offline fun, it just wasn't worth $3/mo to me. I just don't do enough AHing... and when I do, it's usually in conjuction with my trade skills.

I keep coming back to guild chat and how this might change it. I can't exactly put my finger on what. I think it's just that when I'm out of game, I'm doing and thinking of different things than in game.... and my chatting behaviors are also different. This will bleed into guild chat. I donno... maybe I'm just worrying about nothing.

I wonder if they will have an external battle.net API for chatting.... so multi-protocol IM clients can log you onto AIM/YM/battle.net =]

Yes, this is probably going to be the feature that gets my extra $3/month as well.

So this is a bit more limited than I had originally thought.
At this time the feature is limited to chatting with guild members. Whether or not the chat service is expanded in the future is to be determined.
You will only be able to talk with guild members that are online either in the guild chat or via whisper.
I had hoped to be able to chat with you guys and my friends old server. I thought the whole point of Real ID friends was to remove the per toon friendship... this adds that back in. Kinda sounds like a step backwards.

Now of course, this is kind of strange. You log on via your battle.net account, but your guild is per toon. Does this mean you can change toons and chat with a different set of people? This is kind of silly.

In any case, Blizzard always does things in a limited fashion first, and expands from there.

If you have used the remote auction house function before, you will notice that the auction house info is tied to whoever you set on your mobile armory as your "main" character. I am guessing that the chat might work the same way.

I wonder how it will look in-game? Will we see them in the social tab? Will they look different when they /g? I mean if you /g while AFK you get a <AFK> in front of your name, maybe you'll get a funny remote symbol or something. I suspect there will be something to differentiate a remote person from a in-game person to avoid confusion.

It's finally seeing the light of day. Maybe in 4.1? it just says "(coming soon)".

I watched the internet feed of Blizzcon 2010. They had mid-panel interviews. One of these interviews was with the lead mobile dev. He said it was coming sooner than we expected. It's been what, 6mo since then?

It definitely looks like it's all in-guild. You can guild chat and whisper. While I'm excited for the service, I'm somewhat disappointed that you can't send whispers to Real ID Friends.

Chat With Your Guild Using the Mobile Armory
The remote guild chat is now available on all realms from the official site.

* The remote guild chat is part of the "World of Warcraft Remote" service and costs $2,99 / month (also includes the remote Auction House)
* The service works on all realms and a free preview is available for players of the Fizzcrank and Lightbringer realms.
* Not available on Android yet.
I'm not hugely surprised: no Android app... The android app has always been a bastard step child to the iphone app. It's always just been a mobile auction house app. Maybe this new functionality will give them the reason they've been needing to upgrade it to a fully functioning armory app.

Hopefully it'll arrive soon.
