Feedback: Hard modes and raid leading

This has come up before, and I've started noticing it myself - I shout a lot more when I'm talking to people doing hard mode raids, and it's not my usual good-natured barking.

Is this a problem? Are people feeling hurt or annoyed? I'm not a fan of myself when I act like that, so if you want me to back off of the bulldogging a bit, let me know now before I become set in the habits. I made a conscious effort to become more strict about things in raids that have a wipe counter, but I may be going overboard and this is your chance to let me know.

I used to be the 'bad cop' being the asshole during raids when it came time to bark at people. Wait, "used to?" It was a lot more in the past than it is currently, mostly on account of our general play improving.

However I will stand in defense of Dom's barking with the same reason I give to people upon meeting them in person: It's like being a coach, it takes a firm, loud voice to get the team up and focused and back into the game. It's not that we don't like you, but beating around the bush to be nice about it wastes time and doesn't win the game.

I think the guild as a whole has shifted from a very relaxed, laid back atmosphere/make up, to a more disciplined/hard core one.

this is not due to any one person's action, nor is it necessarily a bad thing. But it has happened. Schaden is not a casual guild anymore. It is one of the top raiding guild on the server.

I hate the idea of cutting people out of content based on performance (or any other sort of elitist mind set), but the difficulty of hard mode content demands it.

Bottom line: we raid 2 nights a week on normal content. This is open to all. If there is more than 25 people on who want to raid, i suggest that people able to participate in hard modes give their spots to people who can't.

Actually, that's a really good idea. I kind of made a push for ToGC last thursday, and looking back, it probably wasn't the best idea. I'm fully on board with our tuesday/thursday nights being the casual raiding that his guild was founded on, and setting some other times aside for the people who want to push content that much. i.e. ToGC, the sarth 3d zergs, etc.

It's funny, it still feels to me like we are totally laid back and casual, but managing to down some pretty impressive stuff. Which is a hard thing to balance. And even with 18 wipes or so on the night of our heroic clear, I think everyone had a positive attitude the entire time. Right up to the kill.

I'll make sure to let you know that you're too loud when that happens.

I personally like it when Dom gets a little obsessive-compulsive about reminding people what to do. And when people are making the same mistake over and over, I also think it's OK to hear a raid leader get a little like "Ummm....don't do that." I haven't heard Dom actually get really pissed off - just frustrated and encouraging at the same time, which I think is perfectly fine. The only times I've tried to raid lead, I turned into a fascist, yelling at everybody, so I know it can be hard. Joe (Fanvu), our GM, used to raid lead and he was very hands off, very encouraging and all, and not at all dictatorial. For farm content, I like Joe's method best, but for progression stuff, it's nice to have Dom's extra layer of OC-ness.

I think you have to be a little tougher on people when rocking the "hard" modes. I for one pretty much suck at this game and make mistakes so chances are, until I'm able to step up to the big leagues, I'll be raiding the regular 25's and 10's on Tues and Thurs which allow a little "slop".

I know for a fact that in ToGC, you make a mistake, you wipe the rest of your group. I don't think I'm ready to get kicked out of the guild quite yet. :P

You will be pleased to know that nobody has ever been kicked out for sucking. Only one person has been forced out, and that was for extremely inappropriate behavior. I am not going to comment on whether or not anyone has truly sucked, but we do go through extreme lengths to help everyone not suck, which is a far contrast to other guilds.

I, for one, don't mind the yelling especially if it is positively-charged yelling and not like swearing, being rude, demoralizing, demeaning yelling that some Raid Leaders can be. People will make mistakes, that's a fact....for whatever reason....being tired, sick, kid aggro, wife aggro, computer going wonky, crashes, or whatever. I tend to learn my role very well...and I am trying hard NOT to suck(dps wise) and trying to figure it out. I don't mind taking myself out for those hard modes or ToGCs cause I know I'm not quite geared up enough to handle those DPS-wise....but the fights, I know fairly well by now....it's just getting that other part up to snuff.

I don't like the elitist attitude either....but I figure once I prove my mettle enough..I'll eventually see ToGC and Hard Modes. My tanking bug is gnawing at me and I actually miss tanking....I am also leveling a healer as well cause ya know I like to torture myself hehehe....nah, I'm joking. Anyway, raid leading is stressful...it's hard to wrangle people especially harder if they aren't listening or keep doing the same mistakes. So, frustration is definitely understood...so, I'm ok with you barking Dom, even if you bark a bit more...just if you have to bark me out, please be gentle. ^_-
