Chapter 8: Erase / Rewind

Now that the vote has decided on secret character B-ho, there are a few orders of business and priorities for the rest of this run:

1) B-ho's primary stats are General Knowledge and Looks - Goon will need to build those stats in the 120+ range in order to get the right ending. Preferably, he will build these stats on the weekend so that Miyuki doesn't show up.
2) Miho's affection may not exceed B-ho's affection or B-ho will not show up for certain events (Sports Festival and Hatsumoude).
3) Takumi cannot, repeat, cannot pick Miho as his target. If he does, the game becomes unwinnable.
4) Avoiding bombs is not necessarily a priority this run, as B-ho is not affected by the relationship chart and will never create a bomb on her own. In fact, if Miho's affection becomes too high due to drama club association, then it may become beneficial for Goon to bomb himself.

Oh yeah, and I'll need to reload from earlier because it turns out that my current save met Miyuki at some point, so we begin this chapter with an auspicious reload all the way back to 10/10, before the botanical gardens date.

RELOAD COUNT: 64

10/11: Straight-up trolling

Image
As you may recall, I tried 8 or 9 times to get B-ho to show up to this location, and she didn't show up before. Now I rewind 2 months, and she shows up on the first try. What a troll.

In case you're wondering, her dialogue is 100% the same as Miho's until you make the choice:

Image
B-ho: Isn't it really relaxing to be surrounded by greenery like this?
Option 1: Yeah, there are a lot of broadleaf trees I recognize.
Option 2: Yeah, it makes me want to take a nap.
Option 3: I can't help but worry about bugs.

Much like Miho going ice skating, B-ho doesn't particularly like this location, so the best reaction you can get out of her is neutral.

Image
Goon: I can't help but worry about bugs.
B-ho: Oh, you're a tightly-wound Type A, aren't you?
Goon: (Eh.)

10/17: Invite Miho? out on a date

Miho(?) accepted a date on 10/24 at the karaoke box, one of B-ho's favorite spots This should strain the RNG the least!.

10/24: Karaoke date

Image
Score! B-ho showed up.

Image
Goon: How lucky, there's no wait! We'll be getting a room soon.
B-ho: My horoscope said that lots of luck would be waiting today, just like this.

If you've never been to a Japanese-style karaoke box before, it's very different from the stage-and-screen setup that is associated with karaoke bars. Karaoke boxes in Japan are filled with small, private rooms for rent by the hour. Because the rooms are usually well-soundproofed, it's considered one of the few places in Japan where you can really cut loose and shout, short of being at a concert or a baseball game. Amusingly, this means that Japanese karaoke boxes are an ideal place for tabletop RPG groups to rent and meet up for extended sessions of Dungeons & Dragons or the like. This little nugget of information brought to you by the Tenra Bansho RPG.

Image
B-ho: What do you want to sing?
Option 1: I have to sing the kind of enka that makes your soul shake.
Option 2: Hmm, maybe I'll belt out some hot-blooded rock tunes.
Option 3: The latest idol song, of course.

Between old-person enka, cutesy idol pop, and power rock, what do you think B-ho would like?

Image
Goon: Hmm, maybe I'll belt out some hot-blooded rock tunes.
B-ho: Good idea, let's shout our lungs out.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

After this, the culture festival and Goon's birthday both passed exactly like they did previously. The only notable change from before is an invitation to go skating on 12/5. Oh, and:

Image
This is Miho's autumn uniform at school. Please take notes, there will be a test later.

12/5: Snow day

Image
Goon: Shirayuki-san.
Miho: Fudou-san. I'm sorry. I ran a little bit late.
Goon: I just got here too, you're not late. Let's get moving.
Miho: Oh, but will we be able to do anything in this weather?
Goon: (Oh, crap!)
Miho: There'll be nothing to do if we go there, so we have no choice but to go home.
Miho: I'll be on my way now.
Goon: Wait, Shirayuki-san!
Goon: (I really should have looked at the forecast before making plans.)

This is what happens when you set a date more than a week ahead and the RNG hates you - weather is determined 7 days in advance, and can change if you reload to a save more than 7 days before the affected date. If it's snowing, then most outdoor dates get cancelled.

I've lived in California my whole life, so I have to ask: do outdoor skating rinks actually close when it's snowing? Is this a real thing that happens to places with frozen bodies of water? Because of overzealous saving, I had to reload back to October at this point, and replay all of November.

RELOAD COUNT: 65

In the next few versions of November, any and all calls to Miho were met with rejection. So instead of wasting precious Sundays that could have been spent building stats without meeting other girls, I elected to reload instead.

RELOAD COUNT: 66, 67, 68

11/13: Perfect week bonus

Image
Unlike in Tokimemo 1, having a perfect week at school doesn't always lead to a scene of one of the girls praising you (or dismissing you less than normal, in the case of Yuina). However, there's a giant starburst, so I guess that's something. Plus, there's no Rei waiting around the corner just itching for an opportunity to mock you, either.

11/14: Miho(?) finally says yes to something

Date set for 11/23 at Hibikino Central Park. Huzzah! It only took 4 reloads and a total of 13 attempts!

Image
This is B-ho's autumn uniform at school. I hope you can tell the difference!

11/23: Walk in the park with Miho

Image
Well, crap. It's Miho.

Image
Miho: When we're face-to-face in a place like this, doesn't it feel like something special should happen?
Option 1: Like a scene in a romance novel?
Option 2: Like a set piece in a thriller?
Option 3: Like the slapstick segment of a variety show?

I don't think either Miho or B-ho would like to be hit in the face with a pie or chased down in a park as the autumn leaves fall, so the best option is 1.

Image
Goon: Like a scene in a romance novel?
Miho: Y, yes.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

RELOAD COUNT: 69

11/21: Invite B-ho out skating on 12/11 (she accepts)

11/23: Date with Miho - where was it, again?

Tokimemo 2 retains the memory game from Tokimemo 1. If you have too many dates close together, the game will test you and ask you which meeting place you're supposed to head on the day. It leads to some different lines and is kind of funny every once in a while. Do it too often, and it's just annoying.

Image
Goon: (Where were we meeting, again?)
Option 1: Central park
Option 2: In front of the Ijuuin Bridge

Thanks to copious note-taking, I remembered that 11/23 was the park date, leading to new date-opening dialogue.

Image
Goon: (...)
Goon: (Did I go to the wrong place?)
Option 1: Wait a little longer
Option 2: Move to the Ijuuin Bridge

Here, the game gives you a second chance to get it right. Or to mess up, as the case may be. Since Goon is at the right place already, the right choice is to wait a little longer.

Goon: (What's taking Shirayuki-san so long? She's late.)

Image
B-ho: Ahahahaha, sorry. I'm late.
Goon: (Sigh, she just wants to smooth it over by laughing.)
B-ho: What's wrong?
Goon: Nothing. Let's go.
B-ho: What are we doing today?
Goon: Let's walk down the avenue. It should be really nice this time of year.
B-ho: Yes, let's go.

Image
B-ho: When we're face-to-face in a place like this, doesn't it feel like something special should happen?
Goon: Option 1: Like a scene in a romance novel?

Image
B-ho: Y-yeah, just like that.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

At this point, it is worth noting that Tokimemo 2 has a chain combo bonus - if you go on consecutive dates with the same girl, each date has an increasing impact on that girl's affection. This is meant to make the game easier, but for obvious reasons, it's most difficult to take advantage of on the Miho/B-ho route.

Have I mentioned lately that I hate you guys? Because I do.

12/6-12/10: Midterms

12/11: Skating date, take I don't even know how many anymore

Image
Fortunately, B-ho showed up on the first try.
Goon: I can skate like a pro.
B-ho: Awesome! Skate for me! I wanna see it!

12/12: Test results

Image
Goon: Nice, I did pretty well.

25th: Fudou Gunma
77th: Sakaki Takumi
110th: Minazuki Kotoko
112th: Hinomoto Hikari
133rd: Shirayuki Miho
156th: Hokari Jun'ichirou

In this version of the run, Miho has been spending much more time at drama club hanging out with Goon - which means that her Science scores have suffered greatly and she has dropped down to a red score in that subject. Jun continues to be awful at social studies.

12/19: Invite B-ho to go skiing on 12/23 (she accepts)

12/23: Skiing date round 2; reload until B-ho

RELOAD COUNT: 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76

Image

Image
Goon: I, I see. That's a cute name.
B-ho: Artemis-chan and I both appreciate the compliment.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

12/24: Christmas double date, again

As a way of passing the misery along, I had Goon force Takumi to the merry-go-round with him on this run.

Image
Takumi: Are you crazy?
Goon: I was at least half joking, but...
Takumi: True.
Takumi: But even as a joke, we've taken it this far, and we have to see it through.
Goon: ...Yeah.

Image
Takumi: Well, wasn't that pointless?
Goon: Yeah...

1/1: Hatsumoude; reload until Daikichi

Mechanically, this is because daikichi lowers stress, while any kind of unlucky result can raise the stress stat. Even though Goon's stress stat is fairly low due to his low-stress life of acting, looking good, and sleeping, it's still worth reloading a bad fortune to avoid its negative effects. Besides, what's one or two reloads at this point when we're already pushing 80?

Draw #3: 凶 (bad luck)

RELOAD COUNT: 79

Draw #4: 吉 (good luck)

RELOAD COUNT: 80

Image
Draw #5: 大吉 (great luck)

Goon: Great luck! I'm a different man this year already!

1/2: A quick breather

Image
At this point it's a good time to take a look at the status screen, AKA Goon's room. You'll note that there is now a book on his desk to go with the wig on the top shelf, which shows up because his Lit stat is a hefty 143 at this point of the game. As Goon's stats go up, his room will fill with other little items to add some flavor to the otherwise bland room.

Overall stats:
[fixed]Stamina 103 | Lit 143 | Science 65
Art 90 | Exercise 66 | General Knowledge 89
Looks 89 | Guts 11 | Stress 5[/fixed]

For reasons that will be explained later, Goon's goal by Christmas 2000 is 100 looks - a goal which could be met by in a couple of days, if necessary.

1/9: Invite Miho(?) to the arcade (she accepts)

1/16: Arcade date

Image
B-ho showed up to the arcade - which shouldn't be that surprising, it's one of her favorite places to go.

Image
Goon: The overall player rank at this arcade is pretty low, so you can get a pretty honest game here.
B-ho: Is that so? I don't quite get it, but honest sounds good.
Goon: Kinda. Anyway, Shirayuki-san, let's head in.

Image
B-ho: What kind of game were you playing? I couldn't see very clearly.
Option 1: The latest fighting game.
Option 2: A puzzle game that's popular with girls.
Option 3: A racing game that really appeals to hardcore fans.

I like to imagine here that Goon is playing Garou: Mark of the Wolves, a game very near and dear to my heart. It came out on November 26, 1999, so it would still be new in the arcades at this point in time. Not that this has any bearing on Tokimemo 2, but it's still important to know your history! So even if it wasn't the right answer, it's what I would've played at the time, dammit.

Image
Goon: The latest fighting game.
B-ho: What? You said it was the latest one? Where is it?
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

I looked it up - this is the best option for B-ho, but the other two choices are both good as well. Meanwhile, Miho hates fighting games and is lukewarm on puzzle games and racing games. I think B-ho and I would get along in real life. I bet she'd be a top-tier scumbag and main Kain just because he's well-dressed, though.

Anyway, when presented with something new and shiny, B-ho talks a mile a minute and sounds absolutely nothing like Miho - the first time all game that she hasn't even tried to match Miho's regular speech patterns because she's so excited. She usually drops down a pitch and adds the obligatory "desu yo" when she slips out of Miho mode for even a second.

Image
B-ho: I'm glad I came. This was super fun.
B-ho: Please, invite me out again some time.

Next time: Valentine's Day, White Day, and Mei Day!

Chapter 9: Settling into a rhythm

Time for a bit of a lull in the action - most of the interesting stuff is concentrated into years 2 and 3 in the B-ho route, so it's best to lay low for the end of year 1. Not that this actually makes the game easier, mind you - it's still in the hands of the RNG!

1/30: Status report from Takumi

Image
This is the current state of the game. Amazingly, Kotoko has warmed up to Goon a little, probably because Hikari won't shut up about her best friend who is not named Kotoko. We're going to make sure she ends the school year with the lowest affection rating toward Goon, which will make her Jun's target and ensure that he stays out of the way.

2/14: Valentine's Day

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun!
Goon: Hey, Hikari.
Hikari: Here's your giri chocolate.
Hikari: Bet you're glad to get it!
Goon: I'm surprised you can be so blunt about it.
Hikari: It's waaaay better than moping around all day, isn't it?
Goon: (I mean, she's right, but...)

A reminder: one of Tokimemo 2's biggest improvements over Tokimemo 1 is that the childhood friend character(s) actually act friendly. Also, for an explanation of the difference between polite/giri chocolate and romantic/honmei chocolate, refer to Shiori run chapter 8.

Image
Takumi: Yo!
Goon: Yo, Takumi. What's up?
Takumi: Today's Valentine's Day. You've gotten some chocolate already, haven't you?
Goon: Y, yes.
Takumi: Reeeeeally? Well, whatever.
Takumi: If you don't get any, I'll donate some of mine to you.

Thanks for the save, Hikari. You saved Goon from a fate worse than loneliness: condescension.

Image
Girl: Takumi-kuuun, I'll give you some chocolate if you come over here~!
Takumi: Yes ma'am!
Girl: Oh, Takumi-kun, you're sooooo cute!
Takumi: Tee-hee!
Goon: (Don't be fooled!)

Goon: Hmm? Jun? Hey, Jun!
Goon: (What's he running from? I should probably chase him down.)

Image
Jun: AUGH!
Jun: Oh, it's just you.
Goon: You're acting really weird, dude.
Jun: L, listen, you've gotta believe me! I, I...
Goon: You what?

Image
Jun: I got... f, from a girl... ch, ch, ch--
Goon: Ch?
Jun: I got chocolate! What do I do?
Goon: ?
Jun: WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Goon: (He's so innocent...)

Image
Miho: Fudou-san.
Goon: Hmm? Hey, Shirayuki-san.
Miho: Here's your chocolate.
Goon: What? For me? Thanks, even if it is just giri chocolate.
Miho: I'm glad you like it.
Goon: (She's not gonna deny it.)

Image
Goon: I got two chocolates this year.
Goon: I should just be glad I got any at all. Right?

2/20: Invite Miho to the circus on 2/27 (she accepts)

Image
Just a quick look at what's coming up - February and March are pretty busy months. February 24th is Miho's birthday, while finals, White Day, and spring break loom on the horizon.

2/24: Miho's birthday

Image
To be perfectly honest, it's best if we don't give Miho a birthday present this year, to avoid any potential problems that may arise from her having a higher affection than B-ho. But, just for reference:

Best present: Kero Kero Debeso-chan bobblehead
Neutral present: Wristwatch
Worst present: Silver necklace

For some reason, year 1 and year 2's presents are exactly the same for Miho. I'm not sure why this is - it might have been developer oversight. For this run, I got Miho the best present just to show off her reaction.

Image
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-san!
Miho: Hmm? What's going on? Did you need something?
Goon: Here's your birthday present. Open it up!
Miho: You knew it was my birthday?!
Miho: This present is amazing!
Goon: (She looked really happy, I'm glad she liked it)

For all future runs, I chose not to give Miho a birthday present on 2/24.

2/25: The B-ho in Winter

Image
This is B-ho's winter school uniform. The only way I knew it was her was because of the EVS glitch. Damn this route.

2/27: Circus date, take 1

Image
Miho showed up for this time around.

Image
Goon: We're pretty fortunate, there aren't many places where you can see the circus.
Miho: I'm so thrilled, I love the circus.
Goon: Then let's go be amazed, Shirayuki-san.
Miho: I hope we're ready for all the excitement!

Image
Miho: Seeing a real circus is like a dream come true.
Option 1: It does feel just like a dream.
Option 2: There's still more to this dream.
Option 3: It's not a dream, but a magical reality.

These are pretty ambiguous. Let's try and see if Miho likes 3.

Image
Goon: It's not a dream, but a magical reality.
Miho: I wish life could be this magical every day.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

RELOAD COUNT: 81

Image
Note that a few things have changed in Goon's room as his stats continue to climb. Along with the chonmage wig to represent drama club, and the book to show he's well-read (Lit 100+), there is also a mirror by the TV for being a good-looking fellow (Looks 100+), and a sketchbook on the other side of the TV to represent his artistic side (Art 100+). His General Knowledge is above 100, represented by that... black thing to the right of the PlayStation. Is that supposed to be a PS2?

2/27: Circus, part 2

Image
B-ho this time. Hurray, got it in two! As usual, the dialogue is exactly the same for both Miho and B-ho.

Image
B-ho: Seeing a real circus is like a dream come true.
Option 1: No time for dreaming, keep your eyes on the show.
Option 2: There's still more to this dream.
Option 3: It's not a dream, but a magical reality.

And as usual, the choices are also the s... hey wait a minute, option 1 is different for B-ho! That's a first. It doesn't mean that it's a good choice, mind you, it just means that it's different.

Image
Goon: It's not a dream, but a magical reality.
B-ho: I know, right? I'm so happy!

As has happened a few times before, B-ho slaps a polite "desu" at the end of this sentence as an afterthought. At least she's trying!

3/3: Walk home with B-ho and face the consequences

Image
I wish there were some way to tell them apart other than by staring at the chest every time. It makes me feel weird.

Oh, by the way, this also led to the first bomb warning of this run! I suppose a full year of ignoring everyone not named Shirayuki was enough to make someone sad.

Image
Goon: Lately, there seem to be some bad rumors going around that I've been acting really cold to girls.

There are only three candidates for bombing: Hikari, Kotoko, and Miho. Miho is right out, so it looks like Hikari is the bomb this time. Not that Hikari herself would do any of this rumor-spreading. Wait, didn't Kotoko talk about how acting distant to Hikari would lead to bad rumors? Well, I guess she was telling the truth! Or just stating what she was about to do, either way works.

3/5: Invite Hikari out on a date

This was a little bit unwise because of needs to happen on White Day, but overall fine in the grand scheme of things. It's not like anything can stop Hikari's affection from maxing out anyway, so it's a drop in the bucket.

Image
Goon: Hello, am I speaking to Hinomoto-san?
Hikari: Oh, Gunma-kun! I was wondering when you'd call.
Hikari: So what's up?
Goon: Hey, so...
Goon: Want to go to the amusement park on the 11th?
Hikari: Lemme check.
Hikari: Yeah, that looks fine.
Goon: Okay, let's meet at the bus stop on the 11th.
Hikari: Roger! Don't you forget, okay?
Goon: I'll even be on time. Later.
Goon: (Awesome, I can't wait!)

3/6-3/10: Finals

3/11: Date with Hikari

Goon: (I think I'm a little early.)

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun.
Goon: Hey, Hikari.
Hikari: Thanks for waiting! Let's move!
Goon: Yeah, let's get a move on!

Image
Goon: That sucks, it looks like some of the attractions are closed today.
Hikari: Yeah? Well, it's not like we can do anything about it, so let's enjoy what we can!
Goon: You're right.

Most of the outdoor attractions close down when it's raining, so there will be no roller coaster in the rain.

Image
Hikari: So, where should we head?
Option 1: Let's ride the Ferris wheel
Option 2: Let's ride the merry-go-round.

Only a couple of girls actually like the merry-go-round, so the Ferris wheel it is!

Image
Hikari: You know, when we were up at the very top of the wheel, I thought for a second:
Hikari: Wouldn't it be scary if a sudden gust of wind blew at us out of nowhere?
Option 1: No way would that happen.
Option 2: You'd be fine! I'd be falling right next to you.
Option 3: They shut down the Ferris wheel on windy days.

Personal note: I'm mildly acrophobic. Once, when I was a kid, I got on one of those Ferris wheels with the spinning cages and the carnie forgot to unlock the cage after letting me in and closing the door. So the cage was locked in position relative to the wheel, and when my cage reached the top of the wheel, I was stuck upside-down. Right around then, the power went out and the ferris wheel froze with me strapped to my seat in an upside-down cage. That was probably the least fun 5 minutes of my life.

For this reason, I very quietly freaked out when Hikari put that image in my head. Back to the LP!

Image
Goon: You'd be fine! I'd be falling right next to you.
Hikari: Pfff... ahahahahaha! We'd both still be falling!
Hikari: But it's funny, so I'll allow it.

Image
Hikari: Today was a lot of fun! Let's do this again soon.
Hikari: Really soon.
Hikari: Hey, if you don't mind, could we walk together a little while longer?

3/12: Read the new issue of Hibikino Watcher

Image
[fixed]Mail order ad (far left): "Browalker: With this, you can be muscular and popular too!"
New spot (top left): (Concert hall) "The multi-purpose hall Hibikino Sun Plaza is open! The first act will be the KNM Symphony Orchestra!"
Movie (bottom left): Love Story on the Sunken Ship plays until June 9th. "The year-long voyage is ending, and soon the run of Love Story on the Sunken Ship will be over! Feel all of the emotion one last time at the movie theater!"
Movie (bottom right): Saving Private Lion starts playing June 10th. "The blockbusters from America keep coming to Japan! Private Lion, a human drama with war as its backdrop, starts on 6/10!"
Hibikino Stadium (top right): Baseball starts on April 1st! If you're a real fan, you can't miss opening day!
Hibikino Central Park (right side): "The cherry blossoms at Hibikino Central Park are going to be in bloom from the end of March to the beginning of April! Don't forget to prepare for Hanami!"[/fixed]

Copied and pasted from Tokimeki Memorial 1 chapter 2:
The KNM Symphony Orchestra is a please-don't-sue-us version of the NHK Symphony Orchestra

Also C/Ped from chapter 9:
花見/Hanami/"flower viewing" is a beloved springtime tradition, where people go out for picnics and parties to celebrate and admire the beauty of Japan's famous cherry blossoms. It's vaguely similar to going to see the leaves changing color in autumn, but it's so important to the Japanese that the weather service keeps track of where cherry trees are in bloom with the scrutiny of a storm front. Cherry trees are only in bloom for a couple of weeks a year in each area, so it's pretty crazy to try and join in the revelry - prime picnic spots are often staked out a day or two in advance, and as the day goes on, drunken revelry gets more and more wild.

This cultural note was inserted because "Let's go flower viewing" sounds stupid, even though that's an accurate-ish translation.

3/12: Call Takumi and check for bombs

Image
Yup, the bomb is gone.

3/13: Test results

Goon: Nice, I did pretty well.

Image
26th: Fudou Gunma
107th: Sakaki Takumi
113th: Hinomoto Hikari
123rd: Hokari Jun'ichirou
132nd: Minazuki Kotoko
138th: Shirayuki Miho

Jun, as always, is absolutely clueless at Social Studies. Miho barely dodges having to take two separate supplementary tests, with a 30 in Science and a 20 in Math. Maybe we should spend less time pulling her into drama club!

...Nah.

3/14: White Day

Image
Takumi: White Day's so hard for me! There are so many girls I have to give gifts to.
Goon: Sigh. Life must be so hard for you.
Takumi: Well, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Later!

Don't you just want to punch that smile right in the face? Goon has some impressive self-control.

Image
Jun: What a waste of time.
Goon: Have you already given your gift to that girl from Valentine's Day, Jun?

Image
Jun: N, not yet... but I definitely will.
Goon: (He's so innocent...)
Goon: Well, I should probably give a White Day gift too.
Goon: Who should I give it to?

Option 1: Hikari
Option 2: Miho

Just like in Tokimemo 1, you only get the option of giving a White Day gift to a girl who gave you chocolate on Valentine's Day. And since B-ho can't show up on White Day, it's honestly best to give it to Hikari or no one at all.

Goon: Yeah, I should give it to Hikari.

Image
Hikari: Hey, Gunma-kun. What's up?
Goon: Here, as thanks for the Valentine's chocolate.
Hikari: Oh, thanks. See you later!
Goon: (Well, that was brief.)

3/19: Invite Miho to Hanami on 3/26 (she accepts)

3/26: Hanami, take 1

Image
This is Miho's spring outfit.

Image
Miho: The flower petals dancing in the wind look like they're right out of a fairy tale.
Option 1: I got one in my mouth.
Option 2: It wouldn't be surprising at all if a fairy appeared right now.
Option 3: I want to walk through them.

Since we're reloading anyway, let's go with the obviously bad, but hilariously mood-ruining answer!

Image
Goon: I got one in my mouth.
Miho: Tsk, tsk, cherry blossom fairies, you shouldn't play pranks on people who don't notice you.
Goon: (I made a bad impression...)

Image
Miho: Oh, could you be a time fairy?
Miho: Can you change the past?

3/25: Play with the form of address system

As I mentioned before, Tokimemo 2 has a system that lets you change how you address people - this affects most instances of $girlname in the script, and also serves as a gauge of how much they like you. In most cases, you have a good idea of what the girl will allow you to call them.

In the Miho/B-ho case, this system is incredibly difficult. They have different affection gauges, different forms of address that they prefer, and you don't even get to see which one it is before you decide what to say. Observe!

Image
Goon: Hey, it's Shirayuki-san!

Options:
Shirayuki | Miho | Miho-pyon
Shirayuki-san | Miho-san
Shirayuki-chan | Miho-chan

Calling someone by just their last name is kind of brusque. Calling someone by just their first name is really, really familiar (this is why only Hikari lets you do it). -san is relatively polite, while -chan is a diminutive form of address you use on children and close friends. At this point of the game, with both Miho and B-ho at friendly+ status, this is what they'll allow:

Allowed
Miho: Shirayuki-san, Shirayuki-chan, Miho-chan
B-ho: Shirayuki-san, Shirayuki-chan

Allowed only at max affection
Miho: Miho, Miho-san, Miho-pyon
B-ho: Miho-chan, Miho-san

Never allowed
Miho: Shirayuki
B-ho: Shirayuki, Miho, Miho-pyon

I decided to tempt fate and demonstrate the system with "Miho-chan", which works on Miho but not B-ho.

Image
Goon: Miho-chan!
Miho(?): Who are you talking to?
Miho(?): Because that's definitely not me.

For reference, this is what B-ho looks like in the spring.

Goon: I got one in my mouth.
B-ho: No waaaay, were you just running around with your mouth wide open?
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

Again, B-ho slaps the polite interrogative "desu ka?" at the end, about 2 seconds after she already finished the sentence.

4/5: Mei Day: Enter the Tiny Tyrant

Image
Goon: What's going on? There's some kind of commotion over by the school grounds.
Goon: I guess I'll check it out.

Image
???: This is a stupendously lowly school.
Man in black: My deepest apologies, Mei-sama.
???: It will suffice.

Ijuuin Mei: Not only does she come to school in a helicopter, she comes to school in a helicopter with a canopied armchair.

Goon: (Ugh, she comes to school in a helicopter? And that - that's the Ijuuin family's crest.)
Goon: (Which means that girl is the daughter of the Ijuuins?)
Goon: (Why's she at Hibikino? No, I shouldn't ask. As they say, "the god you don't touch will not curse you"

TL note: The proverb Goon quotes here is commonly translated as "let sleeping dogs lie". However, the Japanese version of the proverb comes with less of a connotation of "don't mess with crazy/dangerous people" and more of a connotation of "don't mess with people who can ruin your life and the lives of everyone you know". So it'd be a little more accurate (and nerdy) to render it as "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."

Image
Mei: Hey, asshole.
Mei: Are you listening?
Goon: Huh? Me?
Mei: Yes, you. You're just the person for the job.
Mei: You will guide Mei to the principal's office.
Goon: Wh, what do you mean?
Mei: While you're at it, you will carry Mei's backpack.
Mei: You should feel honored that you are deemed worthy of this privilege.
Goon: Why do I have to--

Image
Goon: I ACCEPT THIS HONOR GIVE ME THE BAG

Ijuuin Mei: refers to Goon as 貴様/kisama, which used to be an archaic and polite form of address, but these days means "bastard" or "asshole". Refers to herself in the third person, which sounds both childish and imperious coming from her.

Her manservant is perfectly willing to pull guns on teenage boys.

Image
Takumi: Looks like the three of us are in the same class again.
Goon: Again? Seriously?
Jun: Geez, sorry.
Goon: No, I didn't mean that in a bad way.
Takumi: Hey now, let's keep it friendly this year, okay?
Jun: Yeah...
Goon: Yeah.
Takumi: Now if you'll excuse me, I need to say hello to all the girls in class.
Jun: Hmph, how pointless.
Goon: (Those two are such polar opposites.)

Image
Kotoko: Oh, hello.
Goon: Hey, Minazuki-san.
Kotoko: We appear to be in the same class this year.
Goon: Yeah, looks like we can have a lot of fun.
Kotoko: Oh? I bet you say that to everyone.
Kotoko: But it won't work on me.
Goon: (Geez, Minazuki-san is a tough nut.)

All according to plan. Kotoko being in our class means that Jun will fall for her, conveniently leaving the two of them far out of our way.

Next time: Crush them, my froggy minions!

Miho. Curses.

Miho: Where do you want to go today?

Miho: *giggle* I thought you'd say that. That's what I predicted yesterday.

Miho: Do you think that outfit's really good?
Option 1: The plain one piece?
Option 2: The latest see-through fashion?

Because this is Miho, option 1 or option 3 sound the best. B-ho would probably like 2 the most.

B-ho: Where do you want to go today?
Goon: Hmm, let's go to the boutique today.
B-ho: There are some clothes I really want! Let's go!

Between the reaction here and the, erm, size difference you may notice between Miho and B-ho, you do have to wonder where in this crazy story a non-goldfish would have noticed that there seem to be two different people going on dates with him.

At this point, I decided to take advantage of an already-ruined run by trying a few things out. There really are only two things that matter in this portion:

5/6: Interesting thing #1: Call from Jun

Image
Jun: H, hello?
Goon: Hmm? Jun? Is there something wrong?
Jun: Uh, um, well... to tell you the truth...
Goon: Yes?

Image
Jun: I'm in love with Minazuki-san.
Goon: Really? That's awesome, man!
Jun: You may say it's awesome, but I seriously have no idea what to do next.
Goon: Alright, then leave it to me!
Jun: Huh?
Goon: Even if we set up a date for you two, you'd probably be totally lost.
Goon: So, I'll give you a more comfortable setting with a double date at the amusement park.
Jun: S, sorry, man.
Goon: No worries. Gimme a sec, I'll call you right back.
Jun: Yeah...!

Image
Goon: (Hmm, the best way to do this is probably to get Hikari's help.)
(ring, ring)
Hikari: Hello, this is Hinomoto.
Goon: Hey, Hikari? It's me.
Hikari: Hmm? What's got you calling me out of nowhere?
Goon: Do I have a story for you.
Hikari: Ooh, what is it what is it? Is it funny?
Goon: You know Jun? That guy told me he loves Minazuki-san.
Hikari: No way, really?!
Goon: Really! So I was thinking of inviting the two of them out to the amusement park, and help them along.
Hikari: Hehe, you really do take care of your friends. So, what do you want me to do?
Goon: I want you to ask Minazuki-san to go to the amusement park.
Goon: Then, come with me and we'll make sure they're comfortable because it's probably better to have four of us than three.
Hikari: Got it! So when do you want to do it?
Goon: What about Sunday?
Hikari: OK! Leave it to me!
Hikari: I'm so looking forward to this!
Goon: (That's kind of weird. Why would she look forward to it this much?)
Goon: (Whatever, time to call Jun back)
Jun: Hello?
Goon: Hey, it's me.
Goon: Just letting you know, the double date is on for this Sunday.
Jun: I see. Sorry for making you go through all this trouble, man.
Goon: Just don't be late.
Jun: I won't.
Goon: (Sweet, time to support Jun!)

I'll repeat - the biggest improvement in Tokimeki Memorial 2 is how you actually feel like there's a connection between the characters. Goon really looks out for Jun! Hikari and Kotoko look out for each other! And Takumi? Well, he can go take a long walk off a very short pier...

5/12: Interesting thing #2: Walk home with Takumi

Image
Goon: (Hey, it's Takumi.)
Goon: Yo, Takumi!
Takumi: Hey. You headed home?
Goon: Yeah, wanna come with me?
Takumi: Sure, let's swing by the arcade.

Image
Takumi: So, are you in love with anyone?
Goon: Wow, that question was out of nowhere.
Takumi: Don't try and hide it from me, I know you're after someone.
Goon: Well, all the girls are pretty cute, so I don't even know.
Takumi: You're pretty indecisive, aren't you?
Takumi: Me, I've already narrowed it down.
Goon: To who?

Image
Takumi: Miyuki-chan is a little unlucky, but I like how she's always cheerful and never discouraged.

Image
Takumi: Kaedeko-chan is a little klutzy and childish, but that's also her charm.
Goon: (Wh, what?)
Goon: Wait, that isn't narrowing it down at all!
Takumi: There's one more!
Goon: Seriously?
Takumi: Isn't Hikari-chan just the best?
Goon: What?!

Image
Takumi: But that'd be pretty mean to you...
Goon: Hikaru's just a childhood friend.
Takumi: You say that, but your voice is cracking.
Goon: (Erk...)
Takumi: Well, let's just make sure we don't get in each other's ways, okay?
Takumi: Later!
Goon: (Takumi... I'll have to watch that guy.)

This is the event I mentioned before - where Takumi tells you three random names and one of them is his actual target. Even though this run was pretty much throwaway, it's very important to trigger this event in the B-ho route in order to avoid getting absolutely destroyed. In other routes, you just have to make sure you'll be able to beat him in a duel to the pain in order to win the girl of your dreams (if you actually overlap).

End interesting things!

Note: Because of the success at calling Miho/B-ho "Shirayuki-chan" in the previous chapter, the date reminder now says "Date with Shirayuki-chan" instead of "Date with Shirayuki-san".

Success! B-ho finally showed up!

Image
B-ho: What're you playing?
Option 1: It's a quiz game. Want to join me?
Option 2: I'm in the middle of a match in a 3D fighting game!
Option 3: I'm playing a game with monkeys driving trains - isn't it cute?

Based on B-ho's previous reactions, we know that there is one guaranteed good answer here. However, as a personal fan of Konami's Quiz Magic Academy arcade series, I chose based on what I actually like the best.

Image
Goon: It's a quiz game. Want to join me?
Miho: I'm pretty confident at my knowledge in the entertainment genre.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

5/7: Get into a fight!

Image
After spending a half hour in the unused run above trying to pick a fight with street punks, I reloaded and accidentally triggered it on 5/7 with B-ho.

Image
Punk: The fuck's your problem, waltzing around like that?
Goon: (Crap, this is bad.)
Goon: If you've got a problem with me, meet me down by the river!

Image
Welcome to Tokimeki Memorial 2's RPG combat system! You'll notice two big differences right away: one, the use of Final Fantasy 7-style character models; two, the active combat stats for two characters instead of one! That's right, the girls actually get into the mix themselves this time! This can be bad because they can actually be attacked.

Image
B-ho: Good luck!

Unlike Tokimeki Memorial 1, more stats than just stam, exercise, and guts come into play in Tokimemo 2. You actually have magic points now, and spells with strengths based on your academic stats. Lit powers Ice elemental spells, Science powers Lightning elemental spells, Art powers Fire spells, and General Knowledge powers your healing spells.

This is the full list of how your stats affect RPG mode:

RPG stats
HP = (Stamina * .86)*32
MP = (Looks * .86)*4
Attack = Exercise
Defense = Guts
Speed = Stamina - Stress
Accuracy = 250 - Stress
Dodge = 50 - Stress

Spells and what stats unlock them
Art 53: Fire
Art 93: Firo
Art 127: Firego
Lit 53: Blizzar
Lit 93: Blizzaro
Lit 127: Blizzago
Science 53: Thundar
Science 93: Thundarro
Science 127: Thundago
General Knowledge 53: Cuar
General Knowledge 93: Cuaro
General Knowledge 127: Cuago

As you can see, they really wanted more characters to be able to tussle in this game. Which is good, because the Fight Against Punks system triggers a subplot in some characters' stories.

Image
As you can see here, the punks in Tokimemo 2 have no compunctions about hitting women.

Image
Which is good, because the women have no compunction about hitting back. Way way harder. This is Miho's Limit Break: "Your Horoscope For Today".

If you want to see the whole sequence, I've uploaded the whole fight to [video type="youtube"]l0AInGdLVLI[/video]

And of course, because this is the B-ho route and you guys hate me, I had to reload at this point and try this same fight with B-ho in tow.

RELOAD COUNT: 101

[video type="youtube"]fpoy02nEXqU[/video]
Thankfully, the game was kind to me and gave me Miho on the first try.

Just like in Tokimeki Memorial 1, the beaten-up punks run away saying
Punks: Uch... you're not bad. Guess we have to tell the boss!

This is because, according to canon, Tokimemo 2's boss is in fact the boss from Tokimemo 1, who apparently never actually gave up his title to the protagonist of Tokimemo 1.

A note about Miho and B-ho in combat: The two of them have the same limit break, and, in true horoscope RPG fashion, the results of the Limit Break are random. They are also different between Miho and B-ho. Of course. For each girl, there are three horoscope results that produce different magical effects.

Miho's Limit Breaks

1) "You should be wary of the water today" - a torrent of rain deals damage to all enemies (also has an extra effect on the final boss)
2) "Today should be a good day for your health" - Goon gains an aura of strength that turns his next attack into a critical hit.
3) "Today, you will get what you wish for." - Kero Kero Debeso-chans rain from the sky and deal damage to all characters except for Miho.

B-ho's Limit Breaks

1) "You should be wary of the water today" - B-ho's butt gets lit on fire, and B-ho takes damage.
2) "Today should be a good day for your health" - Goon starts to gain an aura of strength, but it lights him on fire instead and he takes damage.
3) "Today, you will get what you wish for." - Kero Kero Debeso-chans rain from the sky and deal damage to all characters, including B-ho.

As you can see, B-ho is the worst character in Tokimemo 2 to bring along to a fight (remember: Akane never gets into a fight. The punks know better). This is why I had to reload at this point - not only did the scheduling lead to some accidental cockblocking of Jun on 5/14 because if you have plans on that day, the double date never happens, but beating the punks the first time leads to a long series of mini-bosses who will interrupt your dates until you managed to beat the last boss. This is important for Akane's storyline, but with B-ho, you really really don't want to get into any fights because she is a huge anchor, and losing any of these fights causes a significant loss of affection.

At this point, I had to reload a couple of times to get back to a good state.

Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

After much searching of Konami games, we discovered that this particular line refers to an obscure Konami fighting game called Battle Tryst. The character in question is Pastel, from the Twinbee series, who is indeed a secret character in Battle Tryst.

The line Homura quotes here is as well-known in Japanese superhero pop culture as "It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!" is in American pop culture. The line is the calling card of Kamen Rider Stronger (1975). "Tou!" is another comic book sound effect associated with superheroes leaping great distances.

Goon: Crap, that's the bell!
Homura: Tardiness is against the rules, you know.
Goon: Whose fault do you think it is that I'm late?
Goon: Besides, aren't you late too?

Image
Homura: I, I'll be fine. I'm the president!
Goon: ...
Homura: Anyway, that's just how it is. Bye!
Goon: What the hell was that?

6/3: Sports Festival, Take 2

This time, I went for an event I knew I could beat: the Kibasen.

Image
Goon: (I've gotta look for teammates. Ooh!)
Goon: Hey, Takumi!
Takumi: Hey there, what's going on?
Goon: Could you be the rider on my Kibasen team?
Takumi: Sure, I don't mind.
Goon: Good, let's kick some ass!

Goon and Takumi technically predate this, but every super robot fan knows that real men ride each other!

Image
Annoyingly, I came within about a half second of winning this event but ran out of time.

Image
B-ho: That was close, but anything other than first place is meaningless.
Goon: (But, but I tried so hard!)

RELOAD COUNT: 106

5/28: Pray for good RNG

Image
Oh thank God

Image
B-ho: Elephants sure are cute.
Goon: Their trunks are kind of creepy. They scare me.
B-ho: Yeah, I'm totally on the same page there.
B-ho: The trunk moves so much more than the rest of the elephant that it seems like it's a completely different animal.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

B-ho: likes puppies and wants to startle them awake by knocking on the glass. Claims she thinks elephants are cute, then calls them creepy and weird.

6/3: Sports Festival, take 3

Image
Who needs teammates? Not Goon and Takumi! Victory!

Image
B-ho: Awesome! You carried the whole team to victory!
B-ho: That was so exciting!
Goon: Y, you think so?
Goon: (She's so excited about it, she's making me blush.)

Next time: Reloading for Takumi

Chapter 11: A summer filled with frogs and fish

6/5: Daily life event with Hikari

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun.
Goon: Hey, Hikari. What's up?
Hikari: Don't ask me why, just lend me your English book!
Goon: I don't mind, but why?
Hikari: Hey, you asked me why!
Goon: Sorry, I couldn't help it.
Hikari: Don't laugh at me.
Hikari: Truth is, I overslept this morning. So I just grabbed my backpack and ran out the door.
Goon: Pfffffff

Image
Hikari: Hey, you laughed at me!
Goon: Sorry. It's just so unlike you to do that.
Goon: Here.
Hikari: Ooh, yay! Later!
Goon: (It looks like she's got a cold.)

6/11: Read the new Hibikino Watcher

Image
[fixed]Mail order (far left): With this, you'll score perfectly on all your tests! "Self-hypnosis study device."
Movie information (bottom left): Saving Private Lion. "Have you met Sergeant Lion yet?"
Aquarium information (text above movie information): The aquarium is undergoing renovations. "The aquarium is currently closed for renovations. Rumor has it they're building a stage - stay tuned!"
The Merry-go-round is closing (top left): "Unfortunately, Hibikino Amusement Place's Merry-go-round is closing. But a new attraction seems to be opening in November!"
The beach is open (top right): "The day you've been waiting for is July 1st! Summer means the beach! The beach means swimsuits! Taste the joy of being buried in the sand!"
Hibikino Amusement Place Night Parade (right): "The annual Hibikino Amusement Place Night Parade starts in mid-August! Your girl will melt in the romantic atmosphere!"
Ennichi (bottom right): "The 4th Sunday of every July is Hibikino Shrine's customary Ennichi celebration! See your girlfriend in a yukata and try your hand at katanuki!"
Fireworks (bottom right): "The fireworks show is on the last Saturday of August! Burn the beauty of our fire flower art against the starry sky into your eyes!"

6/11: Invite Miho to go shopping on 6/18 (she accepts

6/18: Shopping with...

Image
Miho. For the sake of speed, I went to the Fancy Shop on each of these occasions, since Miho's Fancy Shop event conveniently doesn't require making any choices, allowing me to hold down L2 and skip all dialogue until it's time to giblo. And there is a bit of giblo to skip until B-ho shows up.

RELOAD COUNT: 107, 108, 109

6/18: Shopping with B-ho

Image
I spent some time switching between the Miho and B-ho images to see the difference. It's a slight angle change on the right shoulder strap. Eesh.

Image
B-ho: Where are we going today?
Goon: Let's go to the Fancy Shop.
B-ho: Let's hurry! They have some things I've had my eye on.

Image
B-ho: I found a lot of Kero-chan goods here.
Goon: (Kero-chan? Oh, right, she's talking about Kero Kero Debeso-chan.)
Option 1: You bought a ton, it looks like you got enough for two.
Option 2: You bought a ton, let me carry it for you.
Option 3: You bought a ton, I got sick of waiting.

This conversation is way better for Miho than it is for B-ho - the best B-ho option is 2, which is merely neutral. But the conversation is refreshingly honest, at least.

Image
Goon: You bought a ton, let me carry that for you.
B-ho: If I told you I was planning on that from the beginning, would you be angry?
Goon: (Eh.)

RELOAD COUNT: 110

6/18: Shopping date, take 5

Image
B-ho again.

Image
B-ho: Where are we going today?
Goon: Let's go to the boutique.
B-ho: There are some clothes I really want! Let's move.

Image
B-ho: Sorry for keeping you waiting so long.
B-ho: There were so many things I wanted.
Option 1: You bought a ton, it looks like you got enough for two.
Option 2: You bought a ton, let me carry it for you.
Option 3: You bought a ton, I got sick of waiting.

Yes, these are in fact the exact same options, but in a different place. As you might expect, the same answer has 4 different reactions based on location and Miho/B-ho.

Image
Goon: You bought a ton, let me carry it for you.
B-ho: Thanks. Honestly, I was counting on you doing that for me.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

6/25: Hikari's birthday

Goon: Oh yeah, isn't today Hikari's birthday?
Goon: I should get her a present.
Goon: (Okay, I should head over there and give her a present. What should I give her?)
Best option: Glass ornament
Good option: Reference book.
Bad option: Sneakers

For those of you who are paying attention, you may notice that sneakers have gone from "good gift" in year one to "bad gift" in year 2. Hikari doesn't want to be thought of as just Goon's athletic friend anymore!

Picking the best option here leads to a more involved dialogue than the normal birthday event, which we need to see in order to dodge Hikari bombs as long as possible.

Image
Hikari: Hey, Gunma-kun. What're you doing here?
Goon: You think I don't know it's your birthday?
Goon: I brought you a present.
Hikari: Hahaha, thanks. Oh, come on in.
Goon: Hm? Sure.

Image
Hikari: Hey, mind if I open my present now?
Goon: Go ahead.

Image
Hikari: Wow! It's beautiful!
Hikari: But wasn't this expensive?
Goon: You shouldn't worry about it, Hikari.
Hikari: Why?
Goon: Well, um, how can I put this...
Goon: I, uh, I just wanted to see you smile.

Image
Hikari: You're so stupid.
Goon: Hey, wait a second. Didn't you used to say -
Goon: "I'm not stupid, you're stupid for calling me stupid."
Hikari: Geez! You're such an idiot!
Hikari: ...
Hikari: Thank you!

[timg]http://lpix.org/1602176/Tokimemo%202%20 ... e%2006.png[/timg]
And there, we can see the first callback to the childhood prologue. Specifically, the line comes from part 1, when Hikari and Goon play in the sandbox. It's a throwaway line that's easy to forget... unless you're Goon and Hikari.

7/2: Ask Miho to the beach on 7/20 (she accepts)

7/10-7/14: Midterms

Image
33rd: Fudou Gunma
93rd: Hinomoto Hikari
107th: Sakaki Takumi
126th: Minazuki Kotoko
140th: Hokari Jun'ichirou
179th: Shirayuki Miho

Holy crap, Miho's math and science are awful

7/20: To the beach!

Image
B-ho, hurray!

Image
B-ho: There sure are a lot of people here. You think everyone's here to swim?
Option 1: There isn't a single person who comes to the beach and doesn't swim.
Option 2: The beach isn't just about swimming.
Option 3: I think there might be some people fishing, too.

Option 2 seems best.

Image
Goon: The beach isn't just about swimming.
B-ho: You say such smart things. And by that, I mean I'm not going to swim either.
B-ho: I'll keep my reasons a secret.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

At this point, I realized that I hadn't set a date for Ennichi on 7/23 - which isn't necessary, but is an easy way to gain points. So...

RELOAD COUNT: 111

7/15: Ask B-ho to the beach on 7/20 (she accepts)
7/16: Ask B-ho to Ennichi on 7/23 (she accepts)

7/20: Beach date, take 2

Image
Miho this time. Curses!
Miho: There sure are a lot of people here. You think everyone's here to swim?
Option 1: There isn't a single person who comes to the beach and doesn't swim.
Option 2: The beach isn't just about swimming.
Option 3: I think there might be some people fishing, too.

For this choice, at least, Miho and B-ho have the same thing in mind.

Image
Goon: The beach isn't just about swimming.
Miho: That's true. I can see plenty of people who aren't swimming.
Miho: Hehe, just like me.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

7/23: Ennichi

Image
Honest question, can anyone tell the difference between Miho and B-ho in the yukata? Not just the eyes open/closed thing from the previous year.

Miho(?): I picked this yukata based on my fortune, but do you think it looks good?
Option 1: It really suits you. You look cute.
Option 2: That yukata is pretty, especially the pattern.
Option 3: You really took care in putting on that yukata.

Same dialogue as the Ennichi in chapter 4, and the same set of reactions. So let's just see which one this is.

Image
Goon: You really took care in putting on that yukata.
B-ho: Yes, I'm very proud of that.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

For this year, I chose the goldfish scooping mini-game...

Image
Image
Which I continue to be not so great at.

B-ho: If you can't catch at least that many, then it's no fun.
Goon: (Eh.)

RELOAD COUNT: 112

7/20: Beach, take 3

Image
Miho this time. Nothing new.

7/23: Ennichi, take 3

Image
Eyes closed, so this is B-ho, right?

Goon: You really took care in putting on that yukata.
B-ho(?): Yes, my mother showed me how.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

Nope. It's Miho. The eyes are no longer a tell. Let's skip ahead a few reloads.

RELOAD COUNT: 113

Beach Miho, then Ennichi B-ho on this try.

RELOAD COUNT: 114

Image
By the way, screw katanuki. That mini-game's just plain annoying.

B-ho: Hey! Man, it's like you've totally killed the fun!
Goon: (I made a really bad impression.)

Death Glare Count: 8
RELOAD COUNT: 115

Miho twice, and another failure at the katanuki mini-game.

7/20: Beach, take I don't remember anymore

Image
B-ho!

7/23: Ennichi, take I don't remember anymore

Image
B-ho again! But I mashed Circle too hard again and only got the "pretty good" option.

Image
Combined with just getting one turtle in the goldfish scooping mini-game, B-ho's overall impression was only average. But you know what? She showed up twice, so that was good enough for me to stop reloading and keep moving forward.

7/30: Ask Miho to go bowling on 8/6 (she accepts)

8/6: Bowling for B-hos

Image
B-ho on the first try again! Thanks for the pity, RNG.

Image
B-ho: There are so many people here, and it seems like they all love bowling.
Option 1: Well, of course everyone here would love bowling.
Option 2: Do you not like it, Shirayuki-chan?
Option 3: So, want to get started?

Image
Goon: Do you not like it, Shirayuki-chan?
B-ho: No, I like it. Well, I like watching it.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

Good enough! (It's the best answer anyway). Save and move on.

8/14: Summer camp!

As a reminder, B-ho cannot show up to the fireworks show, she cannot show up to summer camp, and she can't show up on the class trip. So, thankfully, neither of these August events will require reloading.

Image
Goon: (Summer camp starts today!)
Miho: Is something wrong?
Goon: Oh, no, I was just firing myself up a little.
Miho: *giggle* You shouldn't get too excited just because we have underclassmen now.
Miho: If you get too enthusiastic now, it could get you in trouble later.
Goon: Don't worry, I know better.

8/16: Miho summer camp event

Image
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan. Good morning.
Miho: *yawn* Oh... good morning.
Goon: You sure look cute in your pajamas.

Image
Miho: Hm? What? Oh... oh no, please don't stare.
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan?
Goon: She just ran off.

If we had somehow managed to get Miho's affection above B-ho's, we could actually use the peeking event to drop Miho's affection level. However, it's not necessary since B-ho has a significant enough lead to show up for the Sports Festival. Thank goodness, because I didn't want to see any more of Bakuretsuzan's backside.

8/26: Fireworks!

Due to B-ho being ineligible for the fireworks show, I chose the "go watch alone" option.

Image
Goon: The fireworks sure were pretty.
Goon: ...
Goon: This feels somehow empty.
Goon: I should go home.

September 1st is the beginning of disc 3, so this is a good stopping point for now.

9/18: Class Trip

Image
Goon: Oh yeah, where were we going on the class trip, again?
Option 1: Hokkaido
Option 2: Kyoto/Nara
Option 3: Okinawa

Yes, these are the same choices from Tokimemo 1. Once again, B-ho is not eligible to show up to the school trip, so our priority is to make sure Miho doesn't like Goon too much. This means we're free to do whatever we want on this trip, and we probably have enough leeway to hang out with Miho.

Goon: Oh yeah, it was Okinawa.

9/19: Day 2

Goon: Let's see, today we split up into our classes and go sightseeing...

Image
Kotoko: There's a lot of walking involved today, isn't there?
Kotoko: It's pretty rough.
Goon: It's not that bad. I think we'll be done soon.
Kotoko: Even though we came here to experience culture, it feels like we're here for training camp. Sigh...
Goon: (Minazuki-san sure is in a bad mood today.)
Kotoko: ...saying that just makes the mood worse. Alright, I should cheer up and get walking.
Goon: (Oh, good.)

9/20: Day 3

Image
Goon: Today was exhausting.

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun.
Goon: Hey, Hikari, what's up?
Hikari: Well, it's nothing too important, but...
Goon: Hmm?
Hikari: Well, uh, hey. Tomorrow, let's head out and go sightseeing together.

Option 1: Of course that's OK!
Option 2: S, sorry, I can't...

This trip, might as well hang out with Miho and see what happens. Sorry, Hikari.

Image
Goon: S, sorry, I can't...
Hikari: Is that so. Well, that's unfortunate, but nothing we can do about it. Later...
Goon: (H, Hikari... dammit.)

9/21: Day 4

Image
Goon: Today, we have free time for sightseeing.
Goon: It'd be boring to walk around alone, so maybe I should invite a girl to go with me.
Goon: Who should I invite?
Option 1: Minazuki Kotoko
Option 2: Shirayuki Miho

Sorry, Hikari. You're not an option because we already said no, so it's Miho's turn, for once!

Goon: (I wonder if Shirayuki-chan's around.)
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan!
Miho: Oh, hello there. What's going on?
Goon: Hey, want to go sightseeing together today?
Miho: That sounds nice. My horoscope said that our compatibility is good today.
Goon: Great, let's go!

Image
Miho: I've always wished for a yacht.
Goon: Yeah, me too. It kinda feels romantic.
Miho: A pure white yacht silently cutting between the shining silver sea and the blue sky as if it could split them apart...
Miho: It's such a romantic scene.
Goon: It really is. But wait, Shirayuki-chan, don't you get sick on boats?
Miho: I do. That's why it's just a wish. In reality, I'll never be able to ride one.
Goon: (That's so like her.)

Image
Miho: !!
Goon: Hmm?
Goon: A, a giant pit viper!
Option 1: Flee alone
Option 2: Flee with her
Option 3: Fight so that Shirayuki-chan can flee.

Time to be a man!

Image
The Pit Viper Lord attacked!

Just like in the previous Tokimemo, you're not meant to win this fight - it's purely for laughs. Observe!

Image
The Pit Viper Lord attacks in two ways. His primary attack is to use Tail Punch, a 2-3 hit attack that does a ton of damage but will never actually kill you.

Image
Eventually, he'll end the fight by using Astral Fang.

Goon: I've been eaten!
Goon: I'm going to suffocate in here!
Mongoose: Grrrrr!

Image
The Mongoose of Justice attacks with Mongoose Zantetsuken - if the name sounds familiar, it's because you're a Lupin the 3rd fan and you know that Ishikawa Goemon's sword is named Zantetsuken - the Steel-cutting Sword.

Or, alternately, you have played your Final Fantasies and know that it's Odin's attack when he's summoned.

Victory!
Thank you, Mongoose of Justice!
Treasure: Snake skin
Earned 8000 XP
Earned 0 gold

Image
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: Are you okay? Did it hurt you?
Miho: You fought so bravely for my sake...
Goon: I, I'm fine.

That night...
Image
Miho: Goon-san.
Miho: Are you free right now?
Goon: Yeah, I am.
Miho: Would you like to take a walk with me?
Goon: Yeah, that's fine. Let's go.

Image
Miho: The sound of the ocean plays a different melody in each place.
Goon: What kind of melody plays here?
Miho: Let's see...
Miho: It's the song of a mother calling to you, saying "You're always welcome here at home".
Goon: Hmm, I feel like I kinda get that.
Miho: Really?
Miho: I kind of regretted saying that as soon as it came out of my mouth.
Miho: I wondered if you were going to think I was weird for saying it.
Goon: It's not like that at all.
Goon: More importantly, I guess we have to say goodbye to this fantasy island today.
Miho: Yes, but it won't be a sad parting.
Goon: ???
Miho: Because I've committed the memories to heart, and on top of that...
Miho: I'm not alone...
Goon: (What's up with Shirayuki-chan? I mean, of course we're all going to head back on the plane together...)

Image
Goon: Whew, we're home. It feels like forever since we were in Hibikino.
Goon: (And that's how the school trip ended...)

Well, that's great and all, but seeing Miho at the blushy stage there, let's play it safe and reload!

RELOAD COUNT: 117

9/18: Class trip, take 2

Image
Goon: Oh yeah, where were we going on the class trip, again?
Goon: Oh yeah, it was Hokkaido.

Image
Kotoko: This whole town of Hotaru is wonderful.
Kotoko: All of these buildings from the Meiji period are still in use.
Goon: They all seem to have a lot of history.
Goon: But inside, they're all things like banks, police boxes, and hotels.
Kotoko: They're relics of an age of Westernization, but they do have a distinctly Japanese feel to them.
Goon: (I figured she'd say something like that)

9/20: Day 3

Image
Miho: Goon-san.
Goon: Oh, Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: Hey, about tomorrow's free time...
Goon: Hmm? What's up?
Miho: If you don't have any plans, could we go together?
Goon: S, sorry, but...
Miho: Is that so? I guess I'll leave you to your plans.

Goon: Who should I invite?

Hikari, of course! It's not like we'll suffer any bad consequences from making Hikari like Goon more...

Image
Hikari: Oh, Gunma-kun. What's up?
Goon: Want to spend some time with me today during free time?
Hikari: Yeah, sure! It'd be really boring to head around alone.

Image
Hikari: The guidebook says that this is the greatest wetland in Japan.

This means that Hikari and Goon are at the Kushiro Shitsugen National Park in Hokkaido.

Hikari: But it's just big is all.
Goon: Whoa, you're not excited at all.
Goon: That's rare for you, Hikari.
Hikari: No, that's not it at all, it's a great place, it's just different from what I imagined.
Goon: Really? What were you imagining?
Hikari: Promise not to laugh?
Goon: Promise.
Hikari: I thought it would be scary.
Hikari: The guidebook said that this place was an "untamed, primordial" place.
Goon: Hahahahaha!
Goon: What, did you think a caveman was going to attack or something?
Goon: You're such a scaredy-cat!

Image
Hikari: Booooo, you said you wouldn't laugh!
Goon: Sorry, sorry.
Hikari: Hahahahaha!
Goon: Hahahahaha!
Hikari: !!
Goon: Hmm?
Goon: A, a giant bear?!
Option 1: Flee alone
Option 2: Flee with her
Option 3: Fight so that Hikari can flee.

The Killer Higuma attacked!

The Killer Higuma attacks with Crush Claw, and strangely enough, the bear is strong against ice magic - meaning that poor Drama Club Goon is awfully equipped to fight him.

Oh yeah, and the Salmon Boomerang is back as its finishing move! Look at how much the upgraded graphics have made the salmon really come to life.

Tokimemo 2:

Goon: Oh no, it's going to eat me!
????: You piece of shit!
Hunter: Y'shouldn't come out here! Gitcher ass home!
Goon: ?!
The Hunter of Justice arrived!
Hunter: This ain't no place fer kids!

Just like in Tokimemo 1, the Hunter of Justice attacks with his legendary gun, "Jiroumaru".

Image
Hunter: Tonight, we're havin' Bear Stew!
Victory!
Thanks, old hunter!
Treasure: Bear pelt

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun!
Goon: Hey, Hikari.
Hikari: That was pretty scary! But thanks for saving me like that.
Goon: I, I did what anyone else would've done.

(that night...)
Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun.
Goon: Huh? Hikari? What's up?
Hikari: Want to take a little walk out front?
Goon: What, right now?
Hikari: Yes, right now.
Goon: Sure, I guess.
Hikari: Awesome, let's get moving.
Goon: 'kay.

Image
Hikari: Hokkaido's scenery really was the best.
Hikari: I've been amazed this whole time.
Goon: Yeah, it's all been great, from Hotaru to Kushiro.
Hikari: I want to come back here some time.
Goon: Me too.
Hikari: Really? Alright, it's a promise. Cross your heart, hope to die!
Goon: Whoa whoa whoa, hold on a second!
Hikari: Hehehe, too late, you already promised!
Goon: (Hikari seems happy.)

Aaaaand now I feel guilty.

9/25: Special assembly

Image
Takumi: Yo.
Goon: Hey, Takumi. What's going on?
Takumi: We don't have first period today. They said there's an assembly in the auditorium.
Goon: Oh yeah? Why's that?
Takumi: Supposedly, we have a student teacher coming.
Takumi: Rumor has it, she's a young and beautiful college student. I can't wait to meet her...
Goon: (This guy...)

Image
Goon: (A student teacher? I wonder what kind of person she is?)
Bakuretsuzan: Ahem. To all students!
Bakuretsuzan: I am the principal of this school...

Image
Bakuretsuzan: BAKU
Bakuretsuzan: RETSU
Bakuretsuzan: ZAAAAAN

Yes, this is reused. Yes, it's still just as awesome.

Bakuretsuzan: But, uh, that doesn't really matter right now.
Bakuretsuzan: Today, I'd like to announce that we have a student teacher coming to our school.
Bakuretsuzan: This student teacher will now introduce herself. Listen up!
Kasumi: Um. My name is Asou Kasumi.
Goon: (What?)

Image
Goon: (It really is Kasumi-san.)
Kasumi: I've been really nervous this whole morning, but it's really comforting to see that this school hasn't changed much at all.
Kasumi: I'm only going to be here for two weeks, but I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.
Goon: (I can't believe she's here...)

I understand the reasoning behind the diagonal camera angle that is so common in Japanese simulations and visual novels. It allows for more of the character to appear in the widescreen TV frame without having to zoom out or rotate fully to horizontal orientation. However, I studied so much film that I can't help but wonder why these games always employ the Dutch angle - are you supposed to be disoriented by this shot? Is Goon dizzied and falling over at this revelation? Does it represent Kasumi's alienation in a foreign environment, even though she's only been out of high school for like 3 years and nothing has changed? Well, whatever.

Image
Takumi: Hey, isn't that Kasumi-san right there?
Goon: Y, yeah.
Takumi: Kasumi-san, can I ask you something?

Image
Kasumi: Yes, what is it... what's your name, again?
Kasumi: Wait, could it be?
Goon: It's good to see you, Kasumi-san. It's been a long time.

Image
Kasumi: No way! What are you doing here?
Kasumi: When did you move back?
Goon: Oh, it was right at the beginning of high school.
Bakuretsuzan: Kasumi-san! Could you save the idle chatter for later?
Kasumi: Oh, sorry! I'll be right there.
Kasumi: So anyway, I'll be staying with my parents while I'm interning here.
Kasumi: You and Hikari are welcome any time.
Goon: Sure.
Kasumi: Okay, see you soon.

Image
Takumi: ...I see, you two are already acquainted.
Goon: Yeah, I guess.
Takumi: A fated reunion - I wish I could have one of those.
Goon: It's not like that, man.
Goon: (But this really is a surprise.)

With Kasumi's reintroduction, you'd think that Goon has her phone number or can get it from Hikari. Nope, Takumi has it for some reason! I try not to think too hard about these things, or I'll start thinking about the Dutch angle again.

Image
As you can see, both Miho and Hikari are at the highest level of affection, and even Kotoko has warmed up to Goon over the months in class with him (not to mention high compatibility from the blood type chart).

Image
Meanwhile, Mei is completely unimpressed by Goon, and Kasumi isn't even in the picture.

10/3: The Legend Returns

Image
Goon: Yo, what're you doing staring up at the bell tower?
Jun: Hmm? Oh, just thinking about something.
Goon: Oh yeah, there's a legend about that bell.
Jun: I heard it from Takumi already.
Jun: I'll make that legend a reality!
Goon: (You've changed a lot, Jun.)
Goon: I'm rooting for you, man.
Kasumi: But that bell won't ring.

Image
Kasumi: When I was here, it was already broken, and I haven't heard anything about them fixing it since.

Image
Jun: (strangled noises)
Kasumi: Oh dear, what's the matter, Hokari-kun?
Goon: Kasumi-sensei, you have unbelievably bad timing.

Poor Jun.

10/7: Kasumi again

Image
Kasumi: Gunma-kun.
Goon: Hey, Kasumi-sensei.
Kasumi: Looks like this is it.
Goon: Yeah, it's going to be a little lonely around here.
Kasumi: I feel the same way.
Kasumi: But you should give me a call some time.
Kasumi: I'm still busy with college, but we can figure something out.
Hikari: Kasumi-saaaaan!
Goon: Hey, Hikari.

Image
Hikari: You're leaving already?
Kasumi: Yes. I wanted to be here longer too, but I have to go take care of things back at school.
Hikari: We didn't even get to go to your house, that's a shame.
Kasumi: Well, you two are still welcome to hang out with me at college.
Hikari: Okay!
Hikari: Oh yeah, I just remembered. You're heading back on Sunday, right?
Kasumi: Yes, that's right.
Hikari: Do you mind if I see you off at the station?
Kasumi: I don't mind at all. *giggle* Thank you.
Hikari: Good, the two of us will be there.
Goon: (What? Two of us?)
Kasumi: My train leaves right at noon.
Hikari: Okay, we'll be there!
Kasumi: Now, I have a few more things to take care of before I go.

Image
Goon: Hikari, when you said "two of us", did you mean--
Hikari: Of course! What, are you not going?
Goon: S, sure, I'll go, but--
Hikari: Then everything's okay!
Goon: (I guess so.)

10/8: Goodbye, Kasumi

Goon: (Crap! I overslept! I have to go see Kasumi-san off at the station today!)
Goon: (Augh, the two of them are already there!)

Image
Goon: Sorry.
Hikari: Geez, you're late!
Kasumi: Haha, you should've called him in the morning to wake him up, Hikari-chan.
Hikari: You're right.
Kasumi: Well, it's almost time.
Goon: What, already?
Hikari: It's your fault for being so late!
Goon: R, right.
Kasumi: Now, you two take good care of each other while I'm gone.
Kasumi: See you!
Hikari: See you later!
Goon: See you later!

A bit of cultural nuance in how Kasumi, Hikari, and Goon say goodbye here - they use the words 行ってきます (ittekimasu) and 行ってらっしゃい (itterasshai), which are most often used when someone's leaving the house in the morning. They carry a bit of a connotation of "I'm heading out, but I'll be back" and "okay, we'll be here to welcome you when you get back" - it's a little hard to explain. But anyway, it's a very familial way of saying goodbye, and carries a lot of closeness with it. When you say these to each other, you're expecting that the next time you see each other, you're going to say ただ今 (tadaima) and お帰り (okaeri), which are the traditional ways to say "I'm home!" and "Welcome home."

Goon: (And so Kasumi-san had to return to college...)

10/8: invite Miho out to a soccer game on the 22nd (she accepts)

10/22: Soccer with B-ho

Image
"Hi, do you remember me? I'm B-I mean Miho, and I am supposed to be the center of attention in spite of not appearing for a few months!

Image
Goon: They're playing soccer at the stadium today, and I managed to score some good seats!
B-ho: Sorry, I'm not very interested in sports, so I can't tell the difference between good and bad seats.
Goon: You shouldn't worry about it anyway. If you're having fun, where you're sitting doesn't matter.

Image
B-ho: It looks all the players who handle the ball the best are all foreign.
Option 1: Well, there's a clear difference in skill.
Option 2: It's because they love the spotlight.
Option 3: I want the Japanese players to play as hard, too.

Let's address the elephant in the room right now: the major Japanese sports have a limit on how many foreign players can be signed to a team. It's four for both J-league soccer and for Nippon Professional Baseball.

The limit is primarily a cost-saving measure so no teams can throw money at foreign talent and create an arms race - I'm told European football leagues impose similar rules for non-European talent to avoid arms races. The rule can carry with it a bit of racist/nationalist baggage - just ask Randy Bass what happened when he dared to threaten Sadaharu Oh's home run record, and try to convince him that it wasn't racially motivated. Beyond that, it's complicated, and I don't feel qualified to elaborate on it.

The point is, B-ho likes 3.

Image
Goon: I want the Japanese players to play as hard, too.
B-ho: I know, right? I definitely love the Japanese players more!
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

Ah, there it is, the 2-second pause and the polite afterthought "desu". We've missed you, B-ho.

10/26: Goon's birthday

Image
Miho(?): Goon-san!
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan. What's up?
Miho(?): Here's your birthday present!
Goon: What? For me?
Miho(?): It's a rare favor, for me to give someone a present!
Miho(?): So be thankful, okay?
Goon: Yeah, thanks!

Alright, that's definitely B-ho talking.

10/28: Mei's birthday

Image
Goon: Oh yeah, today's Ijuuin-san's birthday, isn't it?
Goon: Should I get her a present?
Goon: Yes, I should.
Goon: What should I get her?
Best option: Superelectromagnetic aprom
Good option: Shoujo manga
Worst option: 8x10 of my wonderful self

Oh god I wanted to give her the 8x10 so badly as revenge for Tokimemo 1. But no, I had to go with the apron.
[timg]http://lpix.org/1520942/Post%206%20image%2012.png[/timg]

Image
Mei: What is this?
Goon: It's your birthday present. Go ahead and open it.
Mei: Ooh, this is a happy occasion.
Mei: You understand Mei's interests quite well, asshole.
Mei: Today is a great day indeed.
Goon: (Good, it looks like she really liked the present.)

It's really fun translating Mei. I'm not being sarcastic here.

11/1: Bomb warning

The first one of the game! In the absence of evidence, we rely on Tokimemo 1 habits - if there's a bomb, it's probably [s]Megumi[/s] [s]Hikari[/s] Kotoko acting angry about Hikari being ignored.

Image
Goon: Lately, there's some bad gossip going around about how I'm being cold to the girls...

11/3: Culture festival!

Image
Goon: (Today's the culture festival!)
Goon: Alright, time to help out the club.

Image
Miho: It's just like last year, I'm a wreck.
Miho: My heart's about to leap out of my chest.
Goon: Take some deep breaths. They'll help you relax.
Miho: I'll try.
Miho: You're right, it really helped me calm down.
Goon: (I should really do that myself.)

This year's play isn't quite as good as the Lone Fox and Cub, but it still has its moments.

http://gfycat.com/ImpoliteIdleChital

And now, the Hibikino High School Drama Club presents the classic fairy tale, Cinjitella.

Prince: Young miss!
Pumpkin carriage: The doors are closing. Please stand clear of the doors.
Cinjitella: No!
Cinjitella: W, Wait for meeeeeee!

And so, Cinjitella's night of adventure came to an end.

Image
Miho: Things went well this year, too.
Goon: Yup. Good work, Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: Well done.
Goon: (Shirayuki-chan looks utterly drained too.)

Image
Goon: How was the culture festival?
Miho: It was worth waiting for a year. It was even more fun than last year!
Goon: (It really was a lot of fun.)

11/12: Check out that bomb

Image
I'm sorry, Hikari. Truly, truly sorry.

11/19: Invite Hikari to go shopping on 11/23 (she accepts)

11/23: Blatant attempt to make LP readers feel guilty

Image
Goon: (Whoa. Hikari's already here.)
Hikari: I made it here a little early, so I got kinda bored, Gunma-kun.
Goon: I see. I probably should've gotten here earlier myself.
Hikari: No, it's not your fault. I got here early because I wanted to be here, that's all.
Goon: (Well, at least she's not angry.)

Image
Goon: So, where should we head n--
Goon: Where'd Hikari go?
Goon: Hikari!
Goon: Where'd she go?
Goon: Hikari!!
Goon: HEY, Hikari!
Goon: That's weird. I'll go backtrack.

Image
Hikari: There you are! Finally found you.
Hikari: Good, I was worried that you just left without me.
Goon: That's my line.
Hikari: That's so mean! It's your fault, because you ran on ahead and disappeared on me.
Goon: Hey now, I was just walking like I always do.
Hikari: Fine, but let's hold hands so we don't get split up.
Hikari: Like old times.
Goon: What? No way, not in public.

Image
Hikari: Don't be shy.
Hikari: So, where are we heading today?
Option 1: Yeah, let's head to the boutique.
Option 2: The fancy shop sounds good.

[timg]http://lpix.org/1602179/Tokimemo%202%20 ... e%2009.png[/timg]
Hello, childhood memories! We meet again!

Goon: The fancy shop sounds good.
Hikari: You read my mind! Hurry, hurry, let's go!

Image
Hikari: That little glass squirrel badge is really cute! I wonder if I should buy it?
Option 1: That same squirrel's on a keychain that's pretty cute too.
Option 2: Where do you put those things on, anyway?
Option 3: It doesn't cost that much, I'll buy it for you.

Goon: It doesn't cost that much, I'll buy it for you.
Hikari: What? Really?
Hikari: Well, okay, maybe I'll let you do this for me once in a while.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

Image
Hikari: Hey, are you hungry? We still have some time, so we should swing by somewhere.
Option 1: Sure, let's do that.
Option 2: Sorry, I have to be home soon.

This is another of Tokimemo 2's new systems - the follow-up date. Assuming the weather is good, the girl already likes you, and the impression you made was good or great, the girl will ask if you want to grab dinner on the way home. It's pretty much pure upside. And hey, it's not like Hikari's affection can actually get any higher.

Goon: Sure, let's do that.
Hikari: That's what I wanted to hear. Let's go!

Image
Hikari: Hmm? Are you just getting coffee?
Goon: Yeah, this is enough for me.
Hikari: Want some of my parfait?
Goon: What? No, I'm fine.
Hikari: Don't hold back, just open your mouth and say "ah"!
Option 1: O, okay. Ahhhhh
Option 2: N, no way, that's way too embarrassing.

Goon: N, no way, that's way too embarrassing.
Hikari: Hahahaha! You're turning all red!
Goon: (Damn, she got me good.)

November of year 2 is done, and that marks just past the halfway point of the B-ho run! The next stretch is going to be pretty event-heavy, especially since B-ho finally gets some events that are unique to her instead of shared with Miho.

Next time: It's like you're not even trying anymore

Chapter 13: Dropping the act

12/2: Kotoko's birthday

Kotoko has ever so slowly warmed up to Goon over the last year of being stuck in the same room as him, but thankfully, Kotoko is designed in such a way that you never actually have to go on a date with her to clear a bomb. It's pretty nice because it removes a little bit of the forced round-robin of the previous Tokimemo.

Best present: Kinchaku
Good present: Lipstick
Bad present: A coffee maker

For the sake of peace, it's best to give Kotoko what she wants. A kinchaku is something you really only see as an accessory to a kimono or a yukata these days - I've only personally seen it at shrines and public baths. It's a cloth pouch with a drawstring, used as a purse.

Image
Goon: Minazuki-san!
Goon: I got you a birthday present. Here, open it.
Kotoko: Oh my, this is nice.
Kotoko: You seem to understand women pretty well. Thank you.
Goon: (Good, it looks like she was really happy about that gift.)

"Why don't you smile, Kotoko?"
"I am smiling."

12/11-12/15: Midterms

Image
Goon: I'm so close to the top. I'll get it next time!

12th: Fudou Gunma
88th: Hinomoto Hikari
99th: Sakaki Takumi
120th: Minazuki Kotoko
127th: Hokari Jun'ichirou
176th: Shirayuki Miho

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun!
Goon: Oh, hey Hikari.
Hikari: You did great! You really surprised me.
Goon: You think so? I feel like it's kind of a fluke.
Hikari: No way, don't sell yourself short.
Hikari: Help me study for next time, okay?
Goon: (She seems to be in a really good mood.)

12/22: A familiar invitation

Image
Takumi: Yo!
Goon: Hey, Takumi. What's up?
Takumi: You're gonna be flying solo this Christmas, right?
Goon: ...Well excuse me, jerk.
Takumi: Hahahaha, don't be so angry. Here, have one of these.
Goon: (An invitation to the Ijuuin family's Christmas party?)
Takumi: They say it's going to take place at the Ijuuin mansion, and on top of that, the story is that a lot of girls have been invited.
Goon: I'll go! Thanks, Takumi.
Takumi: The price is right around 1 cream soda. Seeya!
Goon: (No such thing as a free lunch with that guy...)

12/23: Date at Hibikino Tower, take 1

Image
Miho. Damn.

Image
Miho: You don't really understand how big this tower is until you look up from the base, do you?
Goon: Yeah, you really don't.
Goon: Haha, my neck hurts now. Let's go inside, Shirayuki-chan.

Image
Miho: My house is over that way.
Option 1: My house is that same way.
Option 2: From this tower, most houses are that way.
Option 3: The one with the red roof?

Just to see what would happen...

Image
Goon: The one with the red roof?
Miho: No, it's further that way.
Goon: (I didn't make a very good impression.)

Before we reload, it's good to run through the mechanics of the new Christmas party once, especially since there's nothing riding on the results of the party for once.

12/24: Christmas party

Goon: Today is Christmas. There was a party at the Ijuuin mansion, right?
Goon: I have a ticket, so I might as well go.

Image
Goon: ...This place is huge.
Sakunoshin: Would you happen to be a friend of Mei-sama?
Goon: You could say that, or you could say I'm her senpai.
Sakunoshin: That's good enough. Please come inside.
Goon: Oh, thanks.

The Ijuuin Christmas Party works on the same mechanics as it did in Tokimemo 1 - if your Looks stat is too low, Sakunoshin will shoo you away at the door. I have no idea if he will pull a gun on you like in his introduction, though.

Image
Goon: Hmm, so that's Ijuuin-san's big brother.
Goon: They really do look alike.
Goon: (Hey, is that Jun over there?)
Goon: Hey, Jun!

Image
Goon: (What? Minazuki-san?)
Jun: Oh - it's you.
Kotoko: Good evening.
Goon: Merry Christmas!
Jun: W, we're in a hurry, so, uh, later.
Kotoko: I guess that means goodbye.
Goon: Oh, uh, see you guys later.
Goon: (I can't really blame you for this, Jun.)

Okay, so Kotoko is capable of actually smiling. Good work, Jun.

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun!
Goon: Oh, hey Hikari. I didn't know you were here.
Hikari: Yup! I'm glad you got an invitation, too.
Goon: Yeah, it would've been pretty sad spending Christmas alone.
Hikari: Then let's make the most of it!
Goon: (Hikari sure does have a nice smile.)
Hikari: I almost forgot, I was with Kotoko until just a second ago--
Hikari: I'm gonna go look for her.
Goon: No problem.
Goon: (Those two sure do get along well.)
Goon: Oh yeah, it's white elephant time.

Tokimemo 2's white elephant exchange is done on a conveyor belt - instead of picking it yourself, it's based on when you press the Circle button, similar to the old mikuji mini-game or the Shuffle Time system of the recent Persona games.

Image
Spin the roulette and get a present.

Image
Goon: This is... Ijuuin-san's older brother's contribution, I take it?
Goon: It sure is... lucky of me to pick it out of this pile of presents.

Oh COME ON. A whole game later and Rei still haunts Goon! It raises Stress just like the previous Rei gifts did, too.

Goon: Looks like the party's winding down.
Goon: I should head home.

RELOAD COUNT: 118

12/23: Date at Hibikino Tower, take 2

Image
Miho again. D'oh.

12/24: Spin the wheel, get a prize

Image
Goon: I guess this is Ijuuin-san's present?
Goon: It sure is lucky of me to pick it out of this pile of presents.

Cryogenic sleep pods. Huh. Thanks, Mei. These are... so useful.

RELOAD COUNT: 119

12/23: Spin the wheel, get a tower date

Image
The dialogue continues to be the same between the two, but at this point, anyone with half a brain can tell which Miho is which!

Note that B-ho's standing pose has an eternal wink going, which didn't work at all for Saki in the previous game. The artists seemed to learn from their mistake, though, so instead of looking like a creepy facial tic, it just looks like B-ho has something in her eye if you look at it too long. Progress!

Image
B-ho: My house is over that way.
Option 1: My house is that same way.
Option 2: From this tower, most houses are that way.
Option 3: The one with the red roof?

Image
Goon: The one with the red roof?
B-ho: Bzzt! Look a little further.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

Same answer, same kind of reply, different impression. This game can be pretty confusing sometimes.

12/24: Spin the wheel, get a prize.

Image
Mei's present again. That's fine - Mei's usually pretty safe to ignore on a regular playthrough, so she doesn't endanger this run at all.

1/1: New Year's Day 2001

Goon: Aaaand it's the start of a new year.
Goon: I wonder if the new year's cards have come in? Let's see...

Goon: Here's Hikari's card. She's always looking out for me, isn't she?
Image
"Happy new year!
Is your new year going well? Here's to another great year!
Hikari"

Goon: Here's Shirayuki-chan's card. It's so like her to send a card like this. The Kero Kero Debeso-chan is really cute.
Image
"Thanks for everything last year.
Let's have another great year.
Miho"

Goon: Here's Takumi's card. "Let's do our best" - at what? I'm pretty sure I know what he means, though.
Image
"How did last year go for you?
Let's do our best this year, too!
2001.1.1 Sakaki Takumi"

Goon: Here's Jun's card. It's pretty much the same as last year's. Not that I'd expect anything different from him.
Image
"Happy new year. Let's have a good year.
First day of Heisei 13
Hokari Jun'ichirou"

(ding-dong!)
Goon: I'll be right there!

Image
This is the best indicator so far that things are going well. B-ho can only show up on New Year's Day if she's currently in the lead and shows up at Goon's doorstep. That means she's well above both Miho and Hikari.

Goon: Oh hi, Shirayuki-chan. What's going on?
B-ho: Happy new year!
Goon: Oh, uh, happy new year.
Goon: (I can't keep myself from staring.)
B-ho: I'm not just here to wish you a happy new year, I'm here to invite you out to hatsumoude.
B-ho: Want to come with me?
Goon: Yeah, let's go.
B-ho: Good, because the greeting was just an excuse. Let's go!
Goon: Mind waiting a second? I'll go change.
B-ho: Yes, take your time.

There is an option to refuse, but it's a double whammy to pick it - not only will B-ho be disappointed, but calling the Shirayuki household on New Year's Day can only ever lead to Miho showing up.

Image
Goon: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention - you're wearing a haregi, Shirayuki-chan.
B-ho: Yeah - how's it look? I'm not very good with traditional clothes...
Option 1: It's pretty stylish.
Option 2: Traditional clothing suits you. You look cute.
Option 3: It's a lot different from your usual look, Shirayuki-chan.

Image
Goon: Traditional clothing suits you. You look cute.
B-ho: Th, thank you.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)
Goon: Anyway, thanks for waiting. Let's head out.

Image
B-ho: When it's this cold, you have to make sure you don't get sick.
Goon: Yeah.
B-ho: If you got a cold this early in the year, it'd be, like, totally the worst.
Goon: Seriously. If you don't look out, you'll start the year off on a really bad foot.

And once again, a bit of gyaru/gal-talk slips into B-ho's sentences, followed by vestigial politeness.

Image
Goon: (What should I wish for?)
Goon: Wish for good grades, like always

Image
B-ho: And of course, we can't go to the shrine without pulling a fortune, right?
Goon: Good point.
Goon: Alright, let's do it!
B-ho: That's the spirit. I'm super excited about what I might get! Let's hurry up and see.
Goon: (She's treating this more like a raffle ticket than a fortune.)

Image
Goon: Let's see, this year's luck is...
Goon: Chuukichi (moderate fortune). Nice, that's pretty good.
Goon: (I wonder how Shirayuki-chan's fortune came out?)

Image
B-ho: What'd you get?
Goon: Here, see for yourself.
Goon: What was yours like, Shirayuki-chan?
B-ho: What, my fortune? It's on the branch over there. I already tied it on.
Goon: Oh, I, uh, I see.
Goon: (Was it something she didn't want anyone else to see?)

The custom is to tie bad fortunes to a shrine's tree or to special ropes meant to replicate the shrine's trees. These are supposed to leech out the bad luck for you.

Image
B-ho: It was pretty easy to get out of there.
Goon: Yeah. I wish it'd been that easy on the way in, too.
B-ho: Haha, good point. Anyway, I have to head home now.
Goon: Okay, take care.

And, just for tradition's sake, it's time to reload until Goon's fortune is Daikichi, for the sweet sweet -10 Stress it provides.

RELOAD COUNT: 120, 121

After reload 121, I decided to show off what happens if you say no, hoping for a Death Glare.

Image
B-ho: Want to come with me?
Goon: S, sorry, I can't.
B-ho: Oh. Fine, whatever.

RELOAD COUNT: 122, 123, 124

Image
Goon: Daikichi! I'm a different man this year already!

1/13: Miho event

Image
Miho: Oh...!
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan. Wh, what's wrong?
Miho: [s]It's dangerous to go alone! Take this.[/s]

Translator's note: Sorry. I had to. She's the voice of Zelda. It isn't even that far from what she's actually saying.

Miho: It's dangerous for you to go home like this. The sign of calamity is on you.
Goon: What?! The sign of calamity?
Goon: Wh, what should I do?

Image
That is definitely the kind of smile you can trust from a fortune teller. Right?

Miho: ...
Miho: Let's walk home together. If I'm with you, I can probably prevent anything from happening.
Goon: O, okay.
Goon: (If I'd just walked home alone... no, I don't even want to think about it, it's too scary.)

1/14: Back to the arcade!

Image
Woohoo, got it in one!

Image
B-ho: There's a machine over there where you can win a Kero-chan!
Goon: (Kero-chan? Oh, Kero Kero Debeso-chan, right?)
Option 1: Want me to grab one for you?
Option 2: I'm really good at those, I can get one for you.
Option 3: Good luck, Shirayuki-chan!

For reference, Miho prefers it if you wish her luck. As for B-ho...

Image
Goon: I'm really good at those, I can get one for you.
B-ho: Really? Okay, I want a Kero-chan and a Pastel-chan. Could you get those for me?
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

Image
B-ho: Hey, I'm kinda hungry. Wanna go eat?
Goon: Yeah, okay.
B-ho: Good. Come with me.
Goon: Sure!

Image
B-ho: Good, it's not too crowded. We don't have to worry about waiting in line.
Goon: Yeah, there's plenty of seating too.
B-ho: Let's sit over there.
Goon: Okay, I'll claim the table. Order whatever you want for me, Shirayuki-chan.
B-ho: Got it. I'll be right back.

The lengths that some companies will go through to avoid having to use trademarked names is amazing. NacDomald's is hardly the weirdest thing that Japan has done to the golden arches, too.

Image
B-ho: You told me to order whatever I want, so I ordered the same thing for both of us.
Goon: I don't mind. What'd you get?
B-ho: The triple burger set. It's a limited time only, and I wanted to try it.
Goon: Oh, the one that's in all the commercials. What'd you get to drink?
B-ho: Cola. You're fine with carbonation, right?
Goon: That's totally fine. Let's eat.
B-ho: Bon appetit!
Goon: (She has a really cute way of eating.)

1/21: Read the new issue of Hibikino Watcher

Image
[fixed]New Spot - Penguin Show (top left): The aquarium is reopening! Cute penguins are waiting for you!
New Spot - Wild Plune Hibikino (left side): The all-seasons indoor swimming pool Wild Plune Hibikino opens on 3/10! Ride down the water slide with your girlfriend!
Movie - Marageddon (bottom left): The giant meteor has broken through Hibikino's last line of defense! Run to the theaters!
Medal games (top right): A new medal game corner opens at the arcade on 3/29![/fixed]

The other two notes are that the circus has come back to town, and the ski resort and ice skating rink remain open through February.

1/19: Invitation from Miho

Image
Miho: Goon-san.
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-san. What's going on?
Miho: Would you please go shopping with me this Sunday?
Goon: Yeah, gladly.

Image
Miho: Really? Thank you. I was worried that you might say no.
Goon: So, should we meet in front of the train station?
Miho: That's fine. I'm looking forward to it. See you then.
Goon: (Awesome, I can't wait.)

I'm somewhat certain that if Miho invites you out on a date, B-ho can't show up. But there's only way to find out! Unfortunately, it requires double RNG to happen, since all date invitations from girls in the Tokimemo series are for the next day off, which usually means that they don't allow for save points.

1/21: Date with Miho

Image
Well, guess we're stuck with Miho.

Image
Miho: I'm not sure what to get. Could you help me choose?
Option 1: How about the leather trunk in the back?
Option 2: How about the kinchaku in the traditional corner?
Option 3: How about the brand name handbag in the trendy corner?

B-ho is so easy to shop for compared to Miho.

Goon: How about the kinchaku in the traditional corner?
Miho: I looked earlier, but all they have are patterned ones. I like plain designs better.
Goo: (Eh.)

RELOAD COUNT: 125

2/3: Invitation from Miho again

Image
Miho: I know this is sudden, but if you're free tomorrow, want to go shopping with me?
Goon: Yeah, gladly.

2/4: Shopping with Miho, take 2

Image
Once again, Miho invites, Miho shows up. It doesn't prove anything, but it's at least another data point.

Image
Miho: Isn't that great?
Option 1: What, are you talking about that cute outfit over there?
Option 2: What, are you talking about that sexy outfit over there?
Option 3: What, are you talking about that single-mindedly practical outfit over there?

It's obvious which of these answers Miho likes, and which of these answers B-ho will like.

Image
Goon: What, are you talking about that cute outfit over there?
Miho: Yes, isn't it wonderful?
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

RELOAD COUNT: 126

1/26: After school event

Image
This is pretty obviously B-ho. The differences are getting easy to spot even when they're wearing the same clothes - especially since, if you take away the text box, you can very clearly see the brand logo on her bag.

B-ho: Fudou-san.
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan. What's up?
B-ho: If you're just about to head home alone, why not walk with me?
Goon: Sure, that's fine.
B-ho: That's what I figured you'd say. 'Cause you looked pretty bored.

1/27: Awful week event

Image
Goon: (Ugh... nothing seemed to go well this week.)
Kotoko: How lame.
Goon: ...

On the plus side, at least she's not Rei.

2/10: Perfect week event

Image
Goon: (This week went great!)
Miho: Amazing. You make me feel like I have to work just as hard.
Goon: (Awesome!)

2/14: Valentine's Day

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun!
Hikari: Ummmm... here, take this.
Goon: Oh, thanks. Hey, did you make this yourself?
Hikari: I worked really hard, but I have no idea if it actually tastes good. Later!
Goon: Wait, Hikari?
Goon: (What's she so worried about?)

Image
Takumi: Yo!
Goon: Yo, Takumi.
Takumi: You get your Valentine's chocolate yet?
Goon: Well, uh, you know...
Takumi: You don't have to lie to me. If you're feeling lonely, I'll give you some of my haul.
Goon: ...
Girl: Takumi-kuuun, I'll give you some chocolate if you come over here~!
Takumi: Yes ma'am!
Girl: Oh, Takumi-kun, you're sooooo cute!
Takumi: Tee-hee!
Goon: (...I can't believe they're buying it.)

Image
Miho: Fudou-san.
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: Don't read too far into this. This is just a normal thank-you.
Goon: I'm just glad to get it. I was actually looking forward to this.

Image
Miho: *giggle* Seeing you this happy makes all the effort I put into making it worthwhile.
Goon: (Wait, what? WHAT?)

Image
Miho(?): Fudou-san.
Goon: Oh, hey Shirayuki-chan.
Miho(?): Here's your chocolate.
Goon: What? Wait, you just gave me one!
Miho(?): Oh, uh, is that so?
Goon: Of course it is, I have it right here!
Miho(?): That, uh, that's a bad batch! I gave it to you by mistake!
Miho(?): This, this is the real one.
Goon: Isn't this from that one really famous shop?

Image
Miho(?): Yeah, isn't this way better than homemade stuff?
Goon: Well thanks, but this is kinda weird...
Miho(?): Hahah. Well, uh, I'm in a hurry. Gotta go!
Goon: Wait, Shirayuki-chan!
Goon: ...she's already long gone.

Yeah, we all know who this is, but it sure is confusing to see them back to back like that.

Image
Goon: I got three chocolates this year. I'm just glad I got any at all...

Next time: "You heard nothing. Got it?"

Chapter 14: Preparing for the home stretch.

2/19: Miho event at school

Image
Miho: Fudou-san.
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan. What's up?
Miho: Would you like to come shopping with me this Sunday?
Goon: Yeah, gladly.
Miho: Really? Thank you. I was worried that you might say no.
Goon: So, should we meet in front of the train station?
Miho: That's fine. I'm looking forward to it. See you then.
Goon: (Awesome, I can't wait.)

Look, just because it's happened twice, doesn't mean that Miho is guaranteed to show up for all of these, right?

2/24: Miho's birthday

Image
This event is exactly the same as year 1's birthday, for some reason. So, I'm just going to say we got the best present and leave it at that. I'm not sure why they made year 1 and year 2's presents the same, though.

2/25: Date with...

Image
B-ho! Third time was actually the charm, for once.

Image
B-ho: Isn't that great?
Option 1: What, are you talking about that cute outfit over there?
Option 2: What, are you talking about that sexy outfit over there?
Option 3: What, are you talking about that single-mindedly practical outfit over there?

Same dialogue, different person!

Image
Goon: What, are you talking about that sexy outfit over there?
B-ho: Yes, it's the latest style.
B-ho: I have great taste, right?
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

2/27: Meet Homura (for real, this time)

Why? Because I needed a good fighter on my team.

Image
Homura: The heavens call!
Homura: The earth cries out!
Homura: The crowd roars!
Homura: All calling on me to defeat evil!

Just so you know, this is the Kamen Rider she's quoting:

[video type="youtube"]yxzoHNPdVbA[/video]

3/4: Date with Shirayuki-chan

Image
Welcome to spring! B-ho seems happy to be out of her winter wear.

Image
But wait! This is the third date in a row near the shopping center, so punks will show up!

Image
But it's fine - B-ho dropped a rain of frogs on everyone, and things worked out. I'll need an excuse to show off the Drama Club limit break later.

Image
Punk: Damn! We have to report this to the boss!

Bring on your boss. Goon will be waiting.

3/5-3/9: Finals

Image
12th: Fudou Gunma
83rd: Hinomoto Hikari
125th: Hokari Jun'ichirou
132nd: Sakaki Takumi
139th: Minazuki Kotoko
189th: Shirayuki Miho

Image
Miho: Fudou-san.
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: It looks like you did pretty well this time.
Goon: I wasn't very confident going in, but it looks like my hard work paid off.
Miho: Good for you! I'm very happy for you.
Goon: (If it makes her this happy, maybe I should keep studying hard.)

3/10: Read the new issue of Hibikino Watcher

Image
[fixed]New Spot - Billiards at the Hibikino Bowl
Concerts: SPEECH from 5/3-5/20, and the KNM Symphony Orchestra from 6/1-8/31.
Hibikino Stadium: Baseball from 4/1-9/30
Hibikino Central Park: Cherry blossoms in bloom from late March through early April
Movies: Marageddon and LA Continental.[/fixed]

3/14: White Day

Image
Takumi: Hey, could you help me hand out my White Day gifts?
Goon: Why should I?
Takumi: I'm just joking. Later~!

Image
Jun: Hmph. How pointless...
Goon: Did you already give your gift to Minazuki-san, Jun?

Image
Jun: Y, yeah... she, she was really happy.
Goon: (Good for you, Jun.)

Goon: Alright, who should I give this to?
Option 1: Hikari
Option 2: Miho
Option 3: Nobody

Might as well give it to Miho. B-ho has a massive lead at this point, and let's try not to dick around with Hikari any further.

Image
Goon: Alright, let's go give this to Shirayuki-chan.
Goon: (I wonder if she's around?)
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan!
Miho: Oh... I had a feeling I'd see you today.
Miho: What did you want to talk about?
Goon: Here - as thanks for Valentine's Day.

Image
Miho: Thanks, this makes me really happy.
Miho: It's like a dream come true to receive this from you.
Goon: (I didn't expect her to be this happy about it)

3/14: Bomb warning!

One guess who it is!
Image
Yep.

Image
While we're at it, we might as well take a look at Homura's sta... holy crap, girl!

3/19: Poor Mei.

Image
Goon: Hmm? Ijuuin-san? What's wrong? You don't usually walk to school...
Mei: M, m, my brother is my sister and my sister is my mother and Sakunoshin is my sister and Akai Homura is a woman!
Goon: Huh?
(Silenced pistol sound)

Image
Sakunoshin: You heard nothing. Understood?
Goon: Uh, sure.
Goon: But, what about Ijuuin-san?
Sakunoshin: Mei-sama has taken a slightly strong dose of medicine.
Sakunoshin: It is nothing you have to worry about.
Goon: Uh... sure.
Goon: (What's going on? Well, at least one thing is true, Homura is a girl, right?)

So this is an event that I have referred to several times in the course of this LP - partially because it's one of my favorites. You can just hear the panic in Mei's voice as she wanders to school in a daze, after discovering that Rei is actually a girl.

However, this scene also flies in the face of everything Tokimemo 1 established about the Ijuuin family. For one thing, talking to Rei reveals that she is supposed to be an only child. For another, Rei also eventually reveals that all women of the Ijuuin family are raised as men until they reach adulthood. Mei retcons both of these facts, which the writers didn't seem to realize until fans brought it up to them.

When confronted with the evidence, the creators basically shrugged and said "Well, it was funnier this way. So that's the way it is now." Frankly, Tokimemo is better with this change. Mei's just too awesome.

3/19: Bomb warning, stage 2

Image
Goon: Hey Hikari. What's wrong?
Hikari: ...
Goon: Wait, Hikari!
Goon: (I think I hurt Hikari without knowing it...)

Goon, this is the smartest thing about Hikari you have said all run. There are three stages to bomb warnings in Tokimemo 2 before one goes off. The game really, really doesn't want you to get bombed.

3/21: Date at the aquarium

Image
Goon: The penguin show just opened here at the aquarium.
B-ho: Oh yeah?
Goon: Yeah, let's go check it out.

Image
B-ho: That penguin dance routine was really cute!
Option 1: They look so stupid, but I guess you can teach them to dance.
Option 2: That dance is pretty popular right now because of that one commercial, right?
Option 3: Yeah, they're really cute when they waddle around.

Image
Goon: Yeah, they're really cute when they waddle around.
B-ho: I know, it looks like it's so hard for them to walk with those tiny little steps. It's so charming.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

I didn't notice this until I was going through and taking screenshots, but the penguins in the background are ever so slightly animated. It's a pretty nice touch!

Image
And, because the weather is good and Goon gave a good answer, B-ho invites Goon to have dinner. The dialogue is exactly the same, but the outfit changes. That's about it.

Image
And, on April 1st, Disc 3 ends. Disc 4 begins year three, the home stretch for the B-ho run!

Next time: Conspiracy.

Chapter 15: Can't Stop Won't Stop

4/1: Bomb-clearing date at the park with Hikari

Goon: (Hikari's pretty late today...)

Image
Hikari: Sorry! I probably kept you waiting, huh?
Goon: I don't really care about the waiting, but what's with the outfit?
Hikari: I figure, the weather's so nice we have to go cycling!
Hikari: I ended up being late because I was getting my bike ready.
Goon: "We have to go cycling!", you say, but...
Goon: You didn't tell me a thing, and I don't have a bike.

Image
Hikari: What? Oh, you're right.
Hikari: Damn, that's a downer.
Goon: ...
Goon: Hikari, want to ride in back?
Hikari: Huh?
Goon: I'm saying I'll pedal, and you can ride in the back.
Goon: The other way's kind of indecent, so I'll take the front!

Image
Hikari: Wow, the breeze feels great!
Goon: Which way should we turn next?
Hikari: Let's head to the lake!
Goon: Okay! Time to fly - hang on tight!
Hikari: I'll be fine! This is easy.

4/5: School starts

Image
Jun: Looks like we're in the same class again.
Goon: Yeah. Let's keep it going smoothly.
Takumi: Hey, I'm in too!
Jun: ...
Goon: ...
Takumi: Hey, what's with the cold shoulder?
Takumi: Geez, whose notes, have you two been relying on, huh?
Jun: Ack...
Goon: Ack...
Takumi: Well, You know what they say, we're all in the same boat now. Let's keep it friendly.
Jun: Yeah...
Goon: ...Yessir.

The saying that Takumi quotes here reads 呉越同舟 "Go Etsu doushuu" and literally means "Wu and Yue on the same boat." It comes from a passage in Sun Tzu's Art of War, where he writes "The men of Wu and the men of Yue are enemies; yet if they are crossing a river in the same boat and are caught by a storm, they will come to each other's assistance just as the left hand helps the right." So it implies that sometimes, you have to work with someone you hate to get something done, not just share their fate like the usual "we're in the same boat" can imply in English.

Image
Takumi: Now, there are some introductions to be made, and so I'll see you guys later.
Jun: I, uh, have something I need to take care of too.
Goon: You gonna say hi to Minazuki-san?
Goon: Hey, do your thing.
Jun: Y, yeah.
Goon: (He's so innocent...)

Image
Miho: Fudou-san!
Goon: Oh, hi Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: *giggle* I'm so glad we're in the same class this year.
Goon: Y, yeah? I'm glad too.

Image
Miho: But...
Miho: I wonder if this is cheating?
Goon: Huh? Cheating at what?
Miho: *giggle* I used a little hocus-pocus to put us in the same class together.
Miho: Oh no, I said it out loud...
Goon: (Wait, seriously? Well, I'm moved, at least.)

Image
Goon: (What?!)
Kasumi: My name is Asou Kasumi, one of the new teachers here.
Kasumi: I'll be your homeroom teacher for this year. Nice to meet you, everyone.
Goon: (Kasumi-san?)

Image
Kasumi: Gunma-kun.
Goon: Kasumi-san, if you were going to start teaching here, you could have at least mentioned it to me.
Kasumi: *giggle*
Hikari: Kasumi-san!

Image
Hikari: It worked great, right?
Kasumi: Like a charm. He was sitting there with his mouth hanging open.
Goon: Wait, Hikari, you knew about this?
Hikari: Yup! She told me over the phone, and I promised to keep it a secret.
Kasumi: That's pretty much all there is to it.
Goon: Hahaha, you got me pretty good.

4/12: Black Magic Woman, part 1

Image
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: Oh no! The sign of calamity is on you!
Goon: What? Oh no! What should I do?
Miho: ...
Miho: As long as you go shopping with me on Sunday, everything will be fine.
Option 1: P, please, take me with you.
Option 2: B, but I already have plans.

Image
Goon: P, please, take me with you.
Miho: Yay! This is going to be so much fun!
Goon: (What? What just happened?)

I have to admit, Miho's game is... at least unique.

4/15: Lucky shopping date

Image
Miho here - that's 3 out of 4 when Miho does the inviting.

Image
Miho: I'm not sure what to get. Could you help me choose?
Option 1: How about the leather trunk in the back?
Option 2: How about the kinchaku in the traditional corner?
Option 3: How about the brand name handbag in the trendy corner?

We've seen this conversation before, and the good answer is 1.

Image
Goon: How about the leather trunk in the back?
Miho: It's very cute! I love the little buckle. I'll buy it!
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

Image
Miho: Um, I feel like getting some dessert. Could you accompany me?
Goon: Yeah, I wanted some too. It feels like that's exactly what I've been waiting for.
Miho: Are you okay on time?
Goon: Time? Yeah, we're fine.

Looks like Miho's at the point where she asks for extra time on dates, too. There's no real harm in it, and it's probably good to spend some time with Miho to make absolutely sure there's no bomb, either (I keep having to tell her no after school, which adds up)

Image
Miho: Oh, is that the pudding a la mode?
Goon: Yeah, I got it because you were thinking about it for so long, and I figured I'd like it too.
Miho: Was I really taking that long to make a decision? That's a little embarrassing.
Goon: Want the whole thing?
Miho: Th, thanks, but I can't eat that much.
Goon: How about we split it?
Miho: Okay! Thanks.

For anti-bomb purposes, I didn't actually reload this one, since I want to fend off the bombs, more out of pride than anything else.

4/24: Homura and Bakuretsuzan

Image
Homura: Yo! I was about to head to the principal's office, want to come with me?
Goon: Are you in trouble again?
Homura: Nah, I'm just bored and want to hang out with him. Stop asking questions and c'mon!
Goon: Hang out? Is that what you do in the principal's office?

Image
Homura: Hey, Kazumi-chan! We're here to kill some time.
Goon: Shouldn't you be more respectful toward the principal?

Bakuretsuzan's office contains a flag, a tanuki statue, a daisho koshirae, a pair of spears, a statue of a fist, and the phrase 一刀両断 "ittou ryoudan", which means "Cut in two with a single sword stroke" and often is used as a saying to get straight to the point and take swift action. It also is used in the martial arts for... cutting things in half with a single stroke. Bakuretsuzan is kind of manly.

Image
Bakuretsuzan: Oh, if it isn't Homura! What's up?
Homura: Nothing's up, that's why we're here.
Goon: (...)
Bakuretsuzan: Well, it must be peaceful out if the student body president has nothing to do. Wonderful, wonderful.
Homura: I knew you'd understand, Kazumi-chan! That's totally right.
Bakuretsuzan: Gahahahahaha!
Homura: Nyahahahahaha!
Goon: (What's with these two?)

4/29: Call Takumi and ask about date spots

This is a mechanic we haven't really had to use in previous playthroughs, but for some reason, I was unable to invite Miho out to the pool earlier. So, calling Yoshio and Takumi allows you to ask about date spots, where they can point out things you've missed in previous Memorial Spots and Hibikino Watchers.

Image
Takumi: Did you know that the indoor pool is open now?
Takumi: This is your chance to see girls in swimsuits!

After this, I was able to ask Miho out to the pool during Golden Week, and she said yes. Thanks, Takumi, you were actually useful!

Image
This is Takumi's new profile of Hikari, which pretty much confirms our suspicions about his target.

[fixed]Hinomoto Hikari
Born June 25th
Sign: Cancer | Blood type: A
Height: 157cm
Club: Track team
MEMO: A sporty girl who loves training.
I love her short hair.[/fixed]

Take good care of her, Takumi. Or the goon squad will wring your tiny little neck.

5/1: We're not getting off that easy

Under normal circumstances, when Takumi is going after a girl, that girl will be less likely to invite Goon out on dates and less likely to have free time to go on dates. Hikari is an exception.

Image
Hikari: Gunma-kun!
Goon: Hey, Hikari. What's up?
Hikari: I'm planning on going to the indoor pool this Sunday, want to come with me?
Goon: Yeah, gladly.
Hikari: Great! Haha, I think my heart skipped a beat for a second there.

Saying no to a date accelerates the bomb meter quite a bit, and we have more than enough leeway to say yes.

5/4: B-ho at the pool

Image
B-ho showed up this time.
Goon: Indoor pools are nice, you can swim whenever you want, no matter what the weather is like.
B-ho: Sure, but it's not that nice for someone like me, who doesn't like swimming.
Goon: Don't say that. There's more to do than just swim. Let's go, Shirayuki-chan.

Image
B-ho: I picked this out based on my horoscope. Does it look good?
Option 1: It's a cute swimsuit, it matches you perfectly.
Option 2: That's the latest style, isn't it? It suits you well.
Option 3: That doesn't work for you at all.

Again, the choice is obvious.

Image
Goon: That's the latest style, isn't it? It suits you well.
B-ho: I didn't even take my own tastes into account when I picked, and this is how it turned out. I was surprised!

Uh-huh. Sure.

Image
Follow-up date excised because the dialogue is still the same.

5/6: Hikari at the pool

Image
Goon: It's really nice to have a place to swim when it isn't summer.
Hikari: Definitely.

Image
Hikari: Wow, everyone's wearing such daring swimsuits. I can't wear anything like that at all.
Option 1: No way, it'd look good on you.
Option 2: Maybe going plain would be better.
Option 3: Anything would work on you, Hikari.

Image
Goon: Anything would work on you, Hikari.
Hikari: What? No way! Me?
Hikari: D, Don't make fun of me like that.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

Image
For once, I actually said no to the follow-up date. Let's not get TOO accommodating.
Goon: Sorry, I have to hurry home.
Hikari: Is, is that so?
Hikari: Sorry. Bye!

6/2: The final Sports Festival!

Image
Goon: Man, it's lunch already?
Hikari: Ta-dah!
Goon: Hey, Hikari. What's with the entrance?
Hikari: Hey! Let's eat our bento over there.
Goon: Sure, why not?

Image
Hikari: Haha! Today, I made us special Sports Festival bento, full of energy.
Goon: Whoa! That piece looks delicious. Yoink!
Hikari: Hey, no fair! Fine, I'll start too.
Goon: Oh no, that one was my favorite!
Hikari: That's your own fault for not grabbing it, then!
Goon: Dammit! Fine, if that's the way it is, no more mister nice guy.
Hikari: That's fine by me. It's no holds barred when we're hungry.

Image
Goon: I don't quite know how it happened, but I feel really full right now.
Hikari: Geez! It's because you ate nearly all of my special bento!
Goon: Hey, you ate most of mine, too!
Hikari: Hahahaha, oh yeah, huh? I guess we're both guilty.

Image
For the third year in a row, I chose kibasen as my event. It lets me get the most aggression out of my system. Also, I can't look at this pose the same way since I found out about the Hawkeye Initiative.

B-ho: Fudou-san!
Goon: Hey, Shirayuki-chan. What's up?
B-ho: Have you picked your kibasen team yet?
Goon: No, not yet.
B-ho: Then do you want to be on my team?
Goon: Of course!
B-ho: Thanks!
Goon: Let's kick some butt!

Image
Butt was kicked. Since B-ho's requirements were met long ago, the only things left to build stats for are graduation day and boss fights. So Goon's Exercise stat is pretty respectable now.

Image
B-ho: Awesome! You carried the whole team to victory!
B-ho: That was so exciting!
Goon: Y, you think so?
Goon: (She's so excited about it, she's making me blush.)

6/10: Rainy date with B-ho

Image
Man, B-ho is really interested in showing off the goods.

By that, of course, I mean the brand logo on her umbrella, which is the same VK as her handbag and backpack.

Image
B-ho: Oh, there's a jacuzzi here.
Option 1: Do you like jacuzzis, Shirayuki-chan?
Option 2: Yeah, there's one at every indoor pool.
Option 3: Forget about that, we should go swimming.

Image
Goon: Do you like jacuzzis, Shirayuki-chan?
B-ho: Yeah, I love them. It feels so nice in a jacuzzi, right?
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression.)

Image
Follow-up excised; the dialogue is still the same.

The cruelest thing about this date is that in order to get a B-ho event, Miho has to be the one who shows up! Sigh. The RNG is so cruel.

RELOAD COUNT: 127

Image
Miho this time. Good!

Image
Goon: You look really cute, Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: Oh... don't look at me like that, it's embarrassing!
Goon: Oh, sorry! Was I staring?
Miho: No, but I feel so self-conscious in a swimsuit.
Goon: (Wow, she looks even cuter when she's acting shy. Wait, what am I thinking about? Change the subject!)
Goon: Let's go on the water slide, Shirayuki-chan.
Miho: What? N, no, that looks really scary. I'll pass.
Goon: Don't worry about it! It's not dangerous at all, so you shouldn't be scared.
Miho: B, but my legs might get all tangled up and I could get stuck.
Goon: Fine, I'll show you it's not scary at all. Wait here.
Miho: Okay.

Goon: (Ugh. I told her it wasn't scary, but from up here, it actually is pretty scary.)
Goon: (I just need to calm down, and...)
Image
Goon: What? Shirayuki-chan?!
Miho(?): !!
Goon: When did you get here? You were at the bottom just a second ago.
Miho(?): ...
Goon: Hey, don't be like that, say something.
(push)
Goon: AUGH!

Image
Miho(?): How was the slide?
Goon: AAAAAUGH!
Miho(?): What's wrong? Why are you acting so spooked?
Goon: Wait, what?
Miho(?): Now, let's just relax and enjoy ourselves.
Goon: Y, yeah. Good idea.

For Miho purposes, this counts as a good-but-not-great date. For reference, the game's name for this event is "Teleportation".

6/10: Read Memorial Spot

Image
[fixed]New Spot (top left): Sculpture exhibit at the museum! 9/11-11/30.
Movie (bottom left): LA Continental.
The roller coaster is closing! (top right): It closes on 8/31!
Upcoming events (Bottom right): Beach opens 7/1.
Night Parade at the amusement park starts mid-August
Ennichi on the 4th Sunday of July.
Fireworks show at the end of August.[/fixed]

Next time: Searching for a worthy opponent.

Chapter 16: Burn

6/25: Hikari's birthday

Best present: Glass pendant
Good present: Newly released pop CD
Worst present: Camouflage bandana

Only the best for Hikari, especially since B-ho has a huge lead now and nothing matters, even bombs.

Image
Hikari: Thanks so much! This was really thoughtful.
Goon: (She looked really happy, I'm glad she liked it)

7/8: Date at the beach

Image
Technically, we're about to reach the very first B-ho exclusive event! Everything else - even the teleportation bit at the pool, counts as a Miho event so far.

Image
B-ho: Thanks for waiting.
Goon: Whoa! You look amazing, Shirayuki-chan!
B-ho: P-Please, don't stare at me like that.
Goon: As a man, it is my duty to take it all in!
B-ho: R, really?

Image
In the background of this scene, you can hear a constant stream of wolf whistles and cat calls from the peanut gallery.

B-ho: So, how's this? Am I sexy?
Goon: (Wow, Shirayuki-chan, you're the most popular person on the beach!)
Goon: (Come to think of it, I never thought that Shirayuki-chan could be this bold.)

You'll have to forgive Goon, he is the protagonist of a romance game, and has a chronic inability to put two and two together. As a related note, B-ho's character theme is called "Look at me!" - I feel like that's appropriate to mention at this juncture.

Image
Goon: (And on top of that, what's with all these assholes!)
Goon: Hey, get off of her!
B-ho: Oh!
Goon: Let's get out of here, Shirayuki-chan! Hurry, this way!

Image
Goon: Phew, I think we lost them.
Goon: Are you okay, Shirayuki-chan?
B-ho: Yeah, thanks!
B-ho: You were really cool back there.

Twice during this conversation, B-ho has forgotten to slap the "desu" at the end of her sentence and had to slap it back on hastily. She is pretty much the Anti-Suiseiseki.

7/9-7/13: Midterms

Image
Goon: I'm so close to the top. I'll get it next time!

14th: Fudou Gunma
93rd: Sakaki Takumi
99th: Hinomoto Hikari
149th: Minazuki Kotoko
154th: Hokari Jun'ichirou

Miho's and Homura's grades are so bad, I had to take two screenshots here!

Image
223rd: Shirayuki Miho
313th: Akai Homura

In my imagination, Homura's tests are covered with doodles of Kamen Rider and Go-Driller. It's the only reasonable explanation for her scoring 31 out of 500. It's what Brock Samson would do.

7/18: Homura's birthday

Best present: DG Godriller
Good present: Health drink
Bad present: Alarm clock

DG here is probably a reference to the grading system for Gundam models - PG for Perfect Grade, MG for Master Grade, etc.

Image
Homura: Uhhh, what's going on?
Goon: I got you a birthday present. Open it up.

Image
Homura: Nyahahahaha, this is right up my alley. Nice.
Goon: (She looked really happy, I'm glad she liked it)

7/18: What? SHIRAYUKI-CHAN is evolving!

Goon: Oh, it's Shirayuki-chan.
Goon: I should walk her home.
Image
Goon: Miho-chan!

Image
Miho: I knew you'd come for me.
Goon: Want to walk home together?

Congratulations! Your SHIRAYUKI-CHAN evolved to MIHO-CHAN!

And honestly, I wasn't a hundred percent sure which Miho this was until the next line. I missed the VK logo on the umbrella, which is a dead giveaway.

Image
B-ho: Yeah, take me home! ...Please.
B-ho: Y, you don't have to walk me all the way home, halfway is fine.
Goon: Okay, let's go.
Goon: (I had a fun time walking home with Shirayuki-chan.)

7/29: Date at the arcade

Image
Dammit. Things were going so smoothly, too!

RELOAD COUNT: 128, 129, 130

7/29: Date at the arcade, take 4

Image
Finally!

Image
Goon: This arcade is kinda like an amusement park of its own now.
Goon: There are a lot more kinds of games than before.
B-ho: Yeah, I can see that. The atmosphere's totally changed, too.
Goon: The clientele's changed for the better, so it's easier for girls to be here too.
Goon: So, let's head to the medal corner.
B-ho: Sure.

Image
B-ho: Oh, there are little toy horses racing. That's really cute.
Option 1: Yeah, looks like they make some pretty cute games now.
Option 2: What a game! Oguri Hat is in it!
Option 3: These races are always between the 5th and 6th poles.

Thanks to the Googling skills of my stream viewers, I found out that Oguri Cap is a famous Japanese race horse from the '90s. so Goon is basically going to say "Hey look, it's Seabiscuit!"

Image
Goon: What a game! Oguri Hat is in it!
B-ho: Hey, you're right. These racing games are awesome!
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

Image
Follow-up date excised because the dialogue is still the same.

8/13-8/17: Summer Camp

Goon: (Summer camp starts today!)

Image
Miho: Thanks for carrying all the luggage. That must have been rough.
Goon: A little. But, well, I'm a guy.
Miho: Haha, that's the spirit. I expect you to be the mood-maker for us.
Goon: Okay.
Goon: (I've gotta make sure I live up to her expectations!)

8/19: The fruits of Goon's training

Image
A new power wells up from within...
Learned the Drama Club Limit Break:
"Want some katsudon?"

"Sheep, what the hell does a rice bowl have to do with this?" you ask.

"You'll see in a little bit; it's really hard to explain without screenshots," I say. Don't worry, I specifically went looking for a fight at this point.

8/25: Fireworks

Image
(ding dong)
Goon: I'm coming!
Goon: Miho-chan? What're you doing here at this hour?
Miho: Um, good evening. Would you like to see the fireworks show with me?
Goon: Yeah, good idea.
Miho: Whew. I was worried about having to walk alone at night.
Goon: Not a problem. Let's head over.

Image
Miho: I love how lively it is at fireworks shows and Ennichi.
Miho: I picked this yukata based on my fortune - does it suit me?
Option 1: You really took care in putting on that yukata.
Option 2: That yukata is pretty, especially the pattern.
Option 3: It really suits you. You look cute.

It's in a different order than in previous years, but this is still exactly the same as before. Time to be as neutral as possible.

Image
Goon: You really took care in putting on that yukata.
Miho: I thought you'd notice.
Goon: (Eh.)

Image
Miho: Oh... there are tears in my eyes.
Option 1: Are you okay? Did you get some sparks in your eyes?
Option 2: Yeah, mine too.
Option 3: You're such a romantic, Miho-chan.

Image
Goon: You're such a romantic, Miho-chan.
Miho: People say that to me a lot, but that's not it.
Miho: I think I'm just easily moved to tears, that's all.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

9/1: Swap to Disc 5

Image
This is it, friends - the final stretch! Six months to go.

9/2: See the penguins with Hikari

Image
More importantly, this is the second date in a row with a meeting in front of the train station. One more to go!

Image
Hikari: Penguins are bigger than I thought they'd be. Especially their bodies.
Option 1: I wonder if they're hard to lift?
Option 2: I wonder if they're scary when they're angry?
Option 3: I'm surprised that birds can get that big.

SCREENSHOT HERE
Goon: I wonder if they're hard to lift?
Hikari: They look really heavy, don't they?
Hikari: Look at how big they are, you probably couldn't lift one if you tried.
Goon: (Looks like I made a pretty good impression.)

Image
Declined the follow-up date again - sorry, Hikari. Another life, perhaps.

9/2: Read the new Hibikino Watcher

Image
[fixed]New Spot - Ochiiru (top left): A new ride at Hibikino Amusement Place - "Ochiru" means "to fall", so this is a Drop Zone/Tower of Terror type of ride.
Concerts (bottom left): Aosis from 10/3-10/28, and TM Recreation from 12/1-12/25.
Hibikino Stadium (top right): KO League Soccer from 10/1-3/31
Seasonal attractions (right): Autumn leaves from 10/15-11/15
Madarao Ski Resort and Hibikino Skate are open from 12/1-2/28
Movies (bottom left and bottom right): LA Continental ends on 12/10, and Go-Driller starts showing on 12/11.[/fixed]

9/3: Guidance counseling

Goon: (Today's guidance counseling.)

Image
Kasumi: So, what do you plan on doing after high school?
Option 1: I plan on going to college.
Option 2: I plan on getting a job.

It honestly doesn't matter that much on the B-ho path, but let's see what is available!

Goon: I plan on getting a job at...
Goon: A second-tier company.
Kasumi: In the end, it's your decision to make, but in my opinion, you should aim higher. You can do it.
Goon: (Alright, I'll try my best!)

9/2: A date with destiny!

Image
Okay, girl, you have my attention. Sadly, I would've preferred Miho to show up here, because...

Image
???: Was it you? Are you the piece of shit who put the hurt on my underlings?
Goon: Who said that?!

Image
Goon: S, Soubanchou?!

As mentioned back in Tokimemo 1, a Banchou is the archetypal boss of a teenage gang. In this case, Soubanchou means something like Overboss. That means this guy is pretty damn badass. You know what also makes him badass? This time around, he's voiced by

WAKAMOTO
[timg]http://lpix.org/1648904/Sf4-bison.jpg[/timg]

GOD
[timg]http://lpix.org/1648903/Perfect_Cell_Cl ... arapau.jpg[/timg]

DAMN
[timg]http://lpix.org/1648900/Charles_code.jpg[/img][/timg]

FUCKING
[timg]http://lpix.org/1648902/DracSymph.jpg[/timg]

NORIO
[timg]http://lpix.org/1648901/onsokumaru03.jpg[/timg]

Yes, I needed all five lines for that, as one line does not adequately describe Wakamoto Norio's awesomeness. According to Tokimemo canon, this is the same Banchou from Tokimemo 1, so he apparently did not give up the mantle to the previous Goon after all.

Here is a video version of the fight against Overboss Wakamoto. I highly suggest that you watch it. Screenshots don't do this very much justice.

[video type="youtube"]Jtp7O2UgsuY[/video]

Image
Soubanchou: By my soul as a man... I challenge you!

Image
It's a showdown with Soubanchou!
B-ho: Do your best!

It's time to fight Soubanchou, or as I like to call him, Overboss Wakamoto! Overboss Wakamoto has 50,000 hit points, which aren't actually that many because a sufficiently statted-up limit break will damage him for close to 9999. His main attacks in his first form are Kikouha (which is similar to his nameless move from Tokimemo 1, visible back in chapter 18 of Tokimemo 1, Shiori route)

Image

And he still has Soderyuu, the Sleeve Dragon from the previous game.

Image

This time, the dragon looks oddly familiar - that's because it's a boss from Life Force/Salamander, and it was also used by Maria in the Sega Saturn version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Konami is nothing if not aware of its history.

Image
And now, the Drama Club limit break in all of its Final Fantasy 8-style glory: "Want some katsudon?"

This is a reference to one of the oldest, most cliched tricks in the Japanese police handbook - it's as recognized as Good Cop Bad Cop, and even sillier in its impressively passive-aggressive Japaneseness.

In popular media, what happens in police interrogation rooms is that the cop or detective will walk into the room with a bowl of hot katsudon (a dish made with rice, eggs, sauce, and fried pork cutlet), and put it in front of the presumably-starving suspect. The cop will try to softball everything, couching it in soft language about how awful the suspect's family must feel, how worried they must be, and so on and so forth, telling him he should just make things easier on himself and cough up all the info the police are asking for. The katsudon is a hot, delicious reward that makes the cop seem even more sympathetic, and the hope is that the promise of hot food and a relieved family will be enough to make the toughest nut crack.

Does that sound silly? That's because it is! It's parodied endlessly in pop culture, and if you've watched The Devil is a Part-Timer, you can see it parodied by the Japanese, who imagine what outsiders must think of it. Khatsu-DUM!

[video type="youtube"]LAJAFr44NA8[/video]

Image

Image
Goon: You should make it easier on yourself and confess already.
Soubanchou: ...
Goon: Your family must be worried sick about you.
Soubanchou: ...!
Goon: It's just you and your mother, isn't it?
Soubanchou: Yeah.
Goon: Don't make her sad.
Soubanchou: Waaaah! Mommy!
Soubanchou: I... I did everything.
Goon: Well said.
Goon: Have some katsudon.
Soubanchou: ...
Soubanchou: ...?
Soubanchou: ...?!!!

Image
Soubanchou: HOW LONG ARE YOU GONNA MAKE ME PUT UP WITH THIS SHIT!

This whole sequence takes 60 freaking seconds. But it does upwards of 9300 damage, so it's worth doing every time it's available. Just... make a sandwich or something. At least it's not as long as Knights of the Round!

Image
B-ho's limit break does its usual work here, and by that I mean it's even worse than useless - it's actively detrimental to victory.

Image
B-ho: You should be wary of the water today.

Image
B-ho: Eek!

When down to about half of his hit points, Overboss Wakamoto does a standard JRPG boss transformation into his true form - represented by his shirt ripping off of his body, Fist of the North Star-style.

Image
Soubanchou: By my soul as a man...
Soubanchou: I cannot lose!

Image
Goon: His fighting spirit is making Soubanchou look enormous!

In this form, Overboss Wakamoto gains a very damaging attack called Kincha Kotaka, or Golden Hawks. More importantly, he gains Super Insight, which nullifies any of Goon's limit breaks.

Image
Image
Goon: What incredible insight!
Goon: He sees through everything!

It's pretty rough, but manageable because most girls (remember that Akane is ineligible for boss fights; Overboss Wakamoto knows better than to mess with her) have a Limit Break that will revert him to his first form. However, there's one problem with this.

Remember how I said that B-ho is the absolute worst character to take into a fight? Along with the previously mentioned drawbacks of B-ho's limit breaks, her attacks do not affect Overboss Wakamoto's status at all and leaves him in his true form, making the B-ho version of this fight ultra-hard mode.

Image
Image
Predictably, the B-ho version of this fight ends in miserable defeat. If only we had a strong ally on our side! Someone who felt no fear. Someone with a just heart. Someone with a strong will to see justice done!

Image

Oh yeah, huh?

RELOAD COUNT: 131

Next time: The heavens call... the earth cries out... and the crowd roars! We call on a Kamen Rider who just happens to be passing by.

Chapter 17: Bad Girl

First post with the new 4:3 ratio macro in effect - let me know if it looks weird or if it looks fine. Darn that PS3 upscaling for squashing the original picture!

Now - because I was careless, my only save before the Soubanchou fight was on 7/22, and I had to reload a few Miho appearances. Great!

Image

RELOAD COUNT: 132, 133

Image
On the third try, the correct version of Miho showed up. Hurray! This portion of the run went pretty much the same as before, until:

9/9: Invitation from Miho to go shopping on 9/16 (accepted)

Image

9/16: Shopping with B-ho

Image
B-ho: Which do you think suits me best?
Option 1: The cute one-piece with the ribbon in front?
Option 2: The slinky, body-conscious outfit?
Option 3: The fashionable camisole?

Image
Goon: The slinky, body-conscious outfit?
B-ho: Oh, you know you like it.
B-ho: But when you say it like that, it gets harder to buy it.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

9/30: Justice is served.

Image
Homura: Gunma. Over here!
Goon: Sorry, did I keep you waiting?
Homura: Forget about that! I've been itching to get started. Let's get to the fun part!
Goon: (How long has Akai-san been here?)

Image
???: Was it you? Are you the piece of shit who put the hurt on my underlings?
Goon: Who said that?!
Goon: S, Soubanchou!
Soubanchou: By my soul as a man... I challenge you!

Image
Two things to note about Homura: One, her hit points are ridiculous. Two, she has zero MP. Zero. She can't cast spells (which is fine, because her stats in those categories are awful.

Homura: Justice will always prevail! Got it?

Image
Since her academic stats are way too pitiful to cast any kind of spell, Homura only attacks with her feet. Which is fine, because she kicks for between 5000 and 9999 damage.

Image
This is Homura's limit break. She stomps right up to Soubanchou, looks him in the eye...

Soubanchou: You want to try and beat me in a staring contest?
Homura: Nah, I give up.
Homura: This is stupid.
Homura: I'm going home.

...Then she shrugs and wanders off. Homuraaaaaaaaa!

Soubanchou: Whew. I almost had to use my Super Insight on a little girl.

Image
So, Homura leaves Goon in the cold to eat all of Soubanchou's attacks. Things look grim for our hero, especially when Soubanchou enters his final form. But just when things look darkest...

Image
Homura: Kaichou kiiiiick!
Homura: Wahahahaha!

Homura's retreat was just a ploy to find a tall place to Rider Kick from! The second half of her attack reverts Soubanchou to his first form, and the rest of the fight is cake from there. Even when Soubanchou morphs into his final form, the act of Homura walking up to him also reverts him to tiny form, leaving him vulnerable to Goon's 9999-damage limit break.

Image
A single katsudon later, it's over.

Image
Victory!
Treasure earned: Excalibur

Image
Soubanchou: How... how could this happen?
Soubanchou: How could I lose to the likes of you?
Goon: Just so you know, your underlings are the ones who picked a fight, not me!
Soubanchou: What?! Is that true, guys?
Punks: ...
Soubanchou: GUYS!
Punks: !!!
Soubanchou: Sorry to cause you so much trouble.
Soubanchou: But I am glad that I was able to face a man like you.
Goon: I feel the same way.
Soubanchou: Haha... and now, I must go.

And now, the biggest barrier to a perfect ending is removed - what could possibly go wrong?

10/2: Hikari bomb red alert

Image
Goon: Hey, Hikari. You heading home?
Hikari: ....
Goon: Wait, Hikari!
Goon: (I think I hurt Hikari without knowing it...)

Oh yeah, that.

10/6: An important announcement

Image
Goon: Hmm? What the heck is going on?
Bakuretsuzan: This year, I have decided that each class will prepare their own presentation for the culture festival!
Bakuretsuzan: Each of you should consider what you want to present.
Bakuretsuzan: That is all!
Kasumi: The classes are presenting for this year?
Kasumi: Okay, everyone, for the next few minutes, you're free to talk amongst yourselves.

Image
Jun: Yo.
Goon: Hey, Jun. Have you thought about what to do for the culture festi--

Image
Takumi: Hey, how about we put on a play?
Jun: A play?
Goon: Why would you want to do one?
Takumi: I wanted to try writing and acting out at least once.
Goon: Writing and acting?
Jun: You?
Takumi: Yup. Me!
Jun: ...
Goon: ...
Goon: Well, I'll think about it.
Takumi: Good!
Goon: (I'm a little interested in what kind of play Takumi would write. Should I support him?)

Image
Miho: Fudou-san.
Goon: Hey, Miho-chan.
Miho: Did you think of something?
Goon: Who, me? I haven't thought of anything.
Miho: You should take this more seriously.
Goon: Did you come up with something, Miho-chan?
Miho: Yes, of course I've been thinking about it - a fortune teller's hut.
Miho: That's pretty much all I'm good at, after all.
Goon: (She really did put some thought into it. That's cool, Miho-chan)

Image
Kasumi: So, does anyone else want to voice their opinion?
Kasumi: Okay, let's put it to a vote.
Goon: Hmm, what sounds good?

Image
Option 1: A play
Option 2: A costume parade
Option 3: A fortune teller's hut

As curious as I am about Takumi's play, there is only one choice here for both the Miho and B-ho routes.

Image
Kasumi: The votes are in, and the fortune teller's hut wins! Let's all work together and do our best.
Goon: Alright! This is the last culture festival of our high school lives. Let's kick some butt!

Image
After the class decides what it's going to do for the culture festival, a new option appears for daily activity: prep for the culture festival. Since there's nothing else important to do, might as well jam on that button.

Image
Strangely, no one other than Goon seems to want to put the work in!

10/9: Kasumi's birthday

Goon: Oh yeah, today's Kasumi-sensei's birthday.

Best present: Aromatherapy set
Good present: Keychain
Bad present: Frilly one-piece

Image
Goon: Hey, Kasumi-sensei!
Kasumi: Hmm? Did you need something?
Goon: I got you a birthday present. Open it up!
Kasumi: Oh, you remembered. Wow, I love these. Thanks!
Goon: (She looked really happy, I'm glad she liked it)

10/11: Hikari takes matters into her own hands

Image
Goon: Hello?
Hikari: Hello? This is Hinomoto.
Goon: Hikari? What's up?
Hikari: Hey, I was going to head to the indoor pool this Sunday.
Hikari: Want to come with me?

This is one of the things that makes Tokimemo 2 so much better than Tokimemo 1: girls, when their bombs are about to go off, will stop sitting around moping and actually do something about the problem. This is the last thing they'll do before the bomb goes off, so saying no to this invitation is the point of no return.

Even though B-ho's route is immune to bombing, I've never let a bomb go off in Tokimemo and now is not the time to be breaking that streak!

Goon: Yeah, gladly.
Hikari: Great! Whew, I think my heart skipped a beat there.

10/14: Bomb-clearing date with Hikari

Image
Hikari: Everyone's swimsuits are so daring. I could never wear that!
Option 1: No way, it'd look good on you.
Option 2: You should probably keep it simple.
Option 3: You'd look good no matter what, Hikari.

Choosing the best option here should keep Hikari's bomb meter clear for a while - only 5 months left!

Image
Goon: You'd look good no matter what, Hikari.
Hikari: What? No way!
Hikari: Not me...
Hikari: Don't - don't tease me like that.
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

And now I feel guilty again. Dangit.

10/23: Miho takes matters into her own hands

Image
Apparently, we've been ignoring Miho too much in favor of Hikari/Homura/B-ho lately, so she calls and invites Goon to go shopping that Sunday. As with before, it's best to say yes here.

10/26: Goon's birthday

Image
Miho(?): Fudou-san!

Since it just says "Shirayuki" here, it doesn't give any indication of which Miho is saying this! Until...

Image
Okay yeah, that's 100% B-ho.

Goon: Hey, Miho-chan. What's up?
B-ho: Do you know what today is?
Goon: Huh?
Goon: (Well, it's my birthday. Is it anything else too?)
B-ho: How could you forget your own birthday?
B-ho: Geez, and here I am with your present and everything.
Goon: What? No, I didn't forget.
B-ho: Reeeally?
B-ho: But seriously, I just wanted to tease you a little.
Goon: O, okay.
B-ho: So let's try this again.
B-ho: Happy birthday! Here's your present.
Goon: Oh, thanks! I'm really grateful.

10/28: Bomb-clearing date with Miho

Image
Thankfully, unlike previous iterations, Miho actually showed up to her own date.

Image
Miho: Which do you think suits me?
Option 1: The cute one-piece with the ribbon in front?
Option 2: The slinky, body-conscious outfit?
Option 3: The fashionable camisole?

Since this is a bomb-clearing mission, let's not summon the time fairy and keep things simple.

Image
Goon: The cute one-piece with the ribbon in front?
Miho: I'll go buy it now!
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

10/31: B-ho ambush

Image
Goon: (Time to head home.)
B-ho: Fudou-san!
Goon: Hey, Miho-chan. What's up?
B-ho: I've been waiting for you.
B-ho: Let's walk home together.
Goon: Yeah, sure.

Image
B-ho: Yay! Okay, let's make sure we take a detour somewhere on the way.
Goon: Sure.

11/3: Black Magic Woman, part 2

Image
Goon: Today's the culture festival!
Goon: I should hurry over to the classroom.

Image
B-ho: You're worried about something, aren't you?
Boy: How did you know?!
B-ho: You're worried about... your girlfriend, right?
Boy: Y, you're right!
B-ho: I knew it!
B-ho: That's pretty much all that people our age think about.

Image
Yeah, THAT'S a face you can trust...

B-ho: Your future is... the absolute worst!
Boy: Wh, what should I do?! That's horrible news!
B-ho: BUT! If you--
Boy: If I what?
B-ho: Never mind, looks like it all ends in tears.
B-ho: You're, like, totally doomed and all that.
Boy: WAAAAH! I should never have gotten my fortune told!
B-ho: Oh, Fudou-san!

Image
Goon: You're amazing, Miho-chan.
Goon: Everyone's leaving in tears.
B-ho: R, right?
Goon: They must have been moved by your words.
Goon: You'd probably put the pros to shame.
B-ho: Hehe, not bad, huh?
Goon: Not bad? It's incredible!
Goon: Oh hey, the line's died down. Could you tell my fortune next?

Image
B-ho: What? No way!
B-ho: Um, I mean, I believe it would be impossible.
Goon: Awww! Why?
Goon: Your predictions are always right on the mark.

Image
B-ho: My powers have been drained.
B-ho: I'm going to take my break now, so please take care of the rest for me.
Goon: (Aww, she left.)
Goon: (Hey, wait, is she seriously going to walk around in that outfit?)

Image
Goon: Whew, it's finally over.

11/18: Hibikino Tower date

Image
Miho.

Image
Miho: It must be so nice to fly freely like a bird.
Miho: I would love to fly like that.
Option 1: I know how you feel.
Option 2: I see. What kind of bird do you want to be?
Option 3: Miho-chan, what would you even do if you flew like that?

Image
Goon: I see. What kind of bird do you want to be?
Miho: That's... not what I meant.
Miho: But if I could, I would like to be a beautiful white swan.
Goon: (Eh.)

RELOAD COUNT: 134

11/16: Hang out (with Homura)

Image
Screenshot included because this is the first time all game that anyone has actually hung out with Goon when he takes the Hang Out with Friends action. Thanks, Homura!

Image
B-ho this time.

Image
B-ho: The town is really pretty when you can see the whole thing from up high.
Option 1: It feels like we're birds.
Option 2: It feels like we're gods.
Option 3: It feels like we're tyrants.

Would you believe that options 2 and 3 are BOTH excellent answers for B-ho? Actually, it's pretty easy to believe, isn't it?

Image
Goon: It feels like we're gods.
B-ho: Then, eeeeeverything I ever want is mine!
B-ho: Right?
Goon: (Looks like I made a great impression!)

12/2: Kotoko's birthday

Goon: (Oh yeah, today's Minazuki-san's birthday, isn't it?)
Best present: Traditional hair ornament
Good present: Fountain pen
Bad present: Wasabi rice crackers

Sadly, I think that choosing to give Kotoko a present cock-blocks Jun. D'oh! Sorry, bro.

Image
Kotoko: Hmm? What're you doing here?
Goon: Today's your birthday, isn't it?
Goon: I got you a present. Open it up!
Kotoko: Oh, I've wanted this for a while! Th, thank you.
Goon: (She looked really happy, I'm glad she liked it)

12/4: Bomb warning

Image
Dammit, Hikari, I thought we were cool!

12/10-12/14: Midterms

Goon: I'm so close to the top. I'll get it next time!

Image
11th: Fudou Gunma
82nd: Hinomoto Hikari
116th: Minazuki Kotoko
135th: Hokari Jun'ichirou
159th: Sakaki Takumi
187th: Shirayuki Miho

Image
311th: Akai Homura

You know what, Homura, I'm not even angry. I'm impressed.

Image
Miho: Fudou-san.
Goon: Hey, Miho-chan.
Miho: It looks like you did pretty well this time.
Goon: I wasn't very confident going in, but it looks like my hard work paid off.
Miho: Good for you! I'm very happy for you.
Goon: (If it makes her this happy, maybe I should keep studying hard.)

12/22: Takumi does his yearly good deed

Image
Takumi: Yo!
Goon: Hey, Takumi. What's up?
Takumi: You're gonna be alone this Christmas, right?
Goon: Yes, I am. Sorry.
Takumi: Hey, don't take it that way. Here, take this.
Goon: (An invitation to the Ijuuin Christmas party?)
Takumi: You know it pretty well, right? A lot of girls come to this party, and they're all wearing party dresses!
Goon: Why, you little--
Takumi: What, you don't want it? Then I'll find someone else who--
Goon: I was just joking!
Takumi: Oh, fine, here you go.
Takumi: Just remember, you owe me big.
Takumi: Later!
Goon: (I have no idea if he's a good guy or a bad guy...)

12/24: Christmas special

Image
Goon: Alright, I should head out for the party soon.
(ring)
Goon: (Hmm? Who could that be?)
Goon: Hello, this is the Fudou residence.
Miho(?): H, hello? Um, my name is Shirayuki...
Goon: Hey, Miho-chan. It's me. What's up?
Miho(?): O, oh. Uh, ummm...
Goon: (???)
Miho(?): Umm, if it's okay with you, would you like to go somewhere right now?
Option 1: With pleasure!
Option 2: I refuse.

As curious as I am about what we could see at the party, there is no way in hell that I'm refusing this summons.

Image
Goon: With pleasure! Is anywhere cool with you?
Miho(?): Yeah.
Goon: Okay, let's head to the tower.
Miho(?): I'll be waiting for you at the bottom.
Goon: Cool, I'll head out soon.
(click)
Goon: Alright! I should hurry--

Image
Goon: Whoa, calm down. I almost forgot my Christmas present.
Option 1: Silver Ring
Option 2: Cat ear headband
Option 3: Kero Kero Debeso-chan Bag

Sadly, there is no option to give B-ho the Silver Ring and the Golden Ring in order to unlock the Inverted Castle. However, it's still the best option for her, so we're going with the Silver Ring.

Goon: Did I forget anything else? Looks like no.
Goon: Alright, everything is ready! And now, to Miho-chan awaits!

Image
Goon: Thanks for waiting!
B-ho: I just got here myself.
B-ho: I'm sorry for calling you out of nowhere on a day like this.
Goon: Don't apologize!
Goon: I'll drop anything when you call, Miho-chan.

Image
B-ho: Wh, whoa, you don't have to--
Goon: (Wow, Miho-chan's blushing. She's so cute.)
Goon: Alright, let's head to the top.
B-ho: Yes.

Image
B-ho: The view is so pretty at night.
B-ho: It's so magical, I wouldn't be surprised if I saw Santa flying by.
Goon: Yeah. It's Christmas, so I bet Santa's flying around everywhere.
Goon: Oh yeah, want to go to the overlook restaurant and eat?
B-ho: Oh, yes.

Fights against giant delinquents, super-rich helicopter-commuting genius girls, rains of plush frogs, all of that I can accept. But just walking into a fancy restaurant on Christmas Eve and getting a table without having a reservation? There's only so far that my suspension of disbelief will go!

Image
B-ho: This place looks super fancy! Will... you be okay?
Goon: It's fine, don't worry about it.
Goon: I've been saving up for today.
B-ho: Ooh, you're so dependable. I'm excited now!

Image
B-ho: I'm so full. It was so delicious, I ate it all.
Goon: I'm glad you liked it.
Goon: Now that we're done, here - from me to you.
B-ho: What? A Christmas present, for me?
B-ho: Yay! I'm so happy!

"...desu."

Image
B-ho: I got you a present too. Here - Merry Christmas!
Goon: Oh, I get one too? Thanks!
B-ho: Haha, today's the greatest.

"...desu."

Image
Goon: Thanks for inviting me out today.
B-ho: No, thank you for coming. I had a lot of fun.
Goon: I'll walk you home.

Image
B-ho: Yes.
B-ho: I'd like to spend a little more time together...
Goon: Hmm?
B-ho: Oh, nothing! Let's go home.

"...desu." It's almost not worth mentioning anymore.
