I have been knocked into a pillar and lived. I have also been knocked onto the travel bumper and lived. I don't know if getting knocked into the pillar is controllable enough that having your back to it is a valid strategy. I might test it next time.

It was Blizzard's design goal to eliminate the difference between dps/heal caster gear. They want a larger pool of people to roll on each item that drops. So there really is not such a clearly defined thing as "resto" gear ...
